We had the good fortune of connecting with Tremunda Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tremunda, what principle do you value most?
Honesty and compassion are the values that resonate most deeply with me. Raised in an environment that emphasized these principles, they have become the foundation of my character as a giving and loving person. For much of my life, I lived according to others’ opinions and perspectives. However, after enduring traumatic events such as domestic violence and sexual assault, I realized the importance of focusing on my own well-being and striving to be the best version of myself.

Honesty is crucial for building trust, especially for someone like me who has experienced PTSD. It reflects how much a person respects and values you. Compassion is equally significant because it acknowledges that we cannot fully understand the daily struggles others face. By embracing both honesty and compassion, I’ve been able to navigate life’s challenges and heal from past traumas.

I hope sharing my story sheds light on the profound impact these values can have, especially for young mothers and victims of domestic violence.

Throughout my journey, I’ve discovered that compassion for others is a cornerstone of my character. As I approach graduation, I am filled with excitement and pride, knowing that perseverance makes the impossible possible. Overcoming trauma has been challenging, and while I continue to navigate its complexities, the unwavering support around me reminds me that I am not alone.

I’ve learned to accept help, embrace my circumstances, and commit to self-improvement. Along the way, I’ve realized the importance of granting myself grace and celebrating my own achievements. Living authentically has empowered me to care for others more effectively.

To the world, I say: Never give up. Your story has the power to inspire and heal. Every journey is unique, and each testimony holds the potential to make a difference.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my story, I want to express my gratitude to my family, Vogel Alcove, Empower, and New Day Services for their unwavering support. My family has always been there for me, and so have these organizations. Vogel Alcove has provided child care, opportunities, and resources, offering an all-in-one support system. Empower and New Day Services have also played a significant role in providing a safe and loving environment for my children, as well as therapy and counseling. Thanks to my family and support system, I’ve made great strides, including halfway completing my GED and securing a $7,000 Pell Grant. I’ve also been growing as a better mom, friend, daughter, sister, and cousin, learning more about myself along the way.
