We had the good fortune of connecting with Mabel Ford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mabel, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Costa Rica, and my family immigrated to the United States in 1990. Watching my parents work tirelessly to build their businesses taught me that the American Dream is within reach for those willing to put in the effort. Their journey showed me that success comes from hard work and seizing opportunities without hesitation. Following their example, I have embraced the same mindset. My mother always reminded me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to, and that belief has become my driving force. I work hard, trust in myself, and know that with God’s help, I will turn my goals into reality.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the founder and first published author of Dreamland Libros, an LLC I launched in 2023. What I enjoy most is the freedom to be creative and develop books that are not only beautifully illustrated but also convey moral lessons that foster good values and bring families together. Starting this journey was challenging since I had never written or published a book before. I believe every job I’ve had – whether as a middle school teacher, academic Advisor at the University of Arkansas, or Instructional Designer at Walmart- prepared me for this moment. These roles gave me the skills to be creative, detail oriented, and a leader, enabling me to produce high-quality work I truly stand behind.

To prepare, I did extensive research, read books, and took classes to navigate both self-publishing and launching an LLC. My goal is to create more bilingual books, with strong moral messages, celebrate the work of minority writers and artists, and help aspiring authors bring their stories to life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m still getting to know the DFW area, but one of my favorite places to take out-of-town friends is downtown Mckinney. It’s such a charming spot with plenty of unique shops. Since I’m a writer, we’d start our day at Neighbor Books bookstore. Then, we’d stop by Habitat Plants + Coffee for some coffee and grab a selfie by their plan wall. After that, we’d wander through the downtown shops, popping in and out of the cutest little stores. We’d wrap up the tour with dinner at Sugar Bacon, the perfect way to end the day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader. She instilled in me a passion for learning, a sense of community, and a strong work ethic.
