We had the good fortune of connecting with Çağdaş İnci and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Çağdaş, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I think the design process, just like a hiking route, starts with the intention of reaching a specific goal. But the path to this goal is not always straight; sometimes the path narrows, sometimes a hill suddenly appears and tests your strength. Just as the landscapes along the way provide breathtaking inspiration as I climb to the summit, each design I make brings me a new discovery and perspective with every step.
Just as I have to deal with ups and downs, flats and obstacles while hiking, I know that I have to be prepared for the ups and downs of my creativity in the design process. The obstacles I encounter along the way push me to find more creative solutions instead of discouraging me. The sense of triumph I feel when I reach the top of the mountain gives me the same satisfaction as when the design reaches its final form.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Today, I’ve reached this point by working my way up, almost clawing my way here. While studying in the painting education department at university, I was introduced to graphic design through one of my courses. At the same time, I was a huge basketball fan. In my free time, I started designing wallpapers featuring NBA players that I followed with interest. I shared these designs with my friends and occasionally printed them out as posters. This self-taught learning journey never stopped. I loved learning, and graphic design loved me back. Today, I’ve worked with many advertising agencies and companies and have received awards for my freely created designs as a creative director.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Turkey’s richness in history and culture has always been one of the biggest sources of inspiration for me. But the places where I have been most nourished have been the places where I have camped with my loved ones. Camping reminds me of the serenity and calmness of nature. In those moments, I disconnect from the world and turn completely inward; my mind becomes clear and my creative thoughts take shape.
Each stop of my week-long dream journey offers me different inspirations. I start this adventure by camping in Dereköy and find serenity and peace in the middle of nature. The coolness of the night and the star-studded sky remind me of the traces of the past and the possibilities of the future. Then I find myself in Kemeraltı, the heart of Izmir, wandering the streets that smell of history. Warm conversations with shopkeepers and a meal full of unique flavors strengthen my bond with this city once again.
When I arrive in Bostanlı, an atmosphere full of the energy of modern city life welcomes me. As I sit in the cafes and watch the city, every detail breathes new life into my designs. This café and restaurant tour both nourishes my soul and inspires me with the current culture.
My last stop is the ancient city of Ephesus. Walking among the ancient stones is like a journey to a completely different world. This heritage from thousands of years ago becomes an endless source of inspiration for me in my design process. The ancient spirit of Ephesus and the energy of modern city life are indispensable parts of this journey.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporter has always been my wife. I tend to succeed in every project that gains her approval. Her visual perception is remarkably strong, and she has a perspective different from mine, which I consider my luck. If she can convince me with her feedback, I re-examine my artwork and evaluate it with a fresh perspective. If I’m also satisfied with the result and feel like saying, “This is it!” then I know the project is on its way to success.
