Meet Malik Johnson | Singer-Songwriter, Actor, Producer, Media Personality

We had the good fortune of connecting with Malik Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malik, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
My success so far is based on faith and perseverance. I can take a break, a breather, vacation or whatever but I can’t give up. I will work all night in the studio and spend my last to make sure my show is right. I’ll put in the work to have the resources needed to create. I’ve performed several times with minor injuries, would not recommend but the show must go on. Practice truly does make perfect so I always make time to rehearse. Investing in my craft and knowing when to take a break has also been a game changer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer-songwriter, producer, actor, and media personality. So far, I’ve released 5 albums (Rated M, Technicolor, Sorry I’m Late, A New Day & MALIK.), and I’m hard at work on my 6th. Acting was my first love, and musical theatre led me to create my own music. One of my many dreams is to perform on Broadway and become an EGOT winner. On the acting front I’ve been featured in several commercials, movies, tv shows and stage productions.
I’m most proud of creating my own platform, The MalikWorld Music Festival, which highlights rising artists and will soon be entering its 3rd year. I also host “The MalikWorld Podcast” & a travel show, “Malik, WYA?” in partnership with Brain Flower Studios. My music is slowly creeping to the million streams mark in over 40 countries. My honesty in my work and tenacity set me apart from others.
I’m constantly learning lessons, I feel like I will always be a student. At a few years shy of 30, I’ve been in the business nearly 10 years and so much is constantly changing about me as a person and artist. Embracing those changes with open arms, never giving up, and focusing on my own journey have been key factors in my career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve had this question before and some of the answers change each time. I love exploring and I discover something new in the DFW everyday. Start off your day with a stop at Black Coffee for amazing coffee and good vibes, then head over to Kinfolk House for some great art, both of which are black owned. The Amon Carter Museum & Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth are my personal favorites. Doc’s Records is a paradise for music lovers and vintage shoppers, some weekends they even have live bands. A quick drive to Burleson for a wine tour at Lost Oak Winery including a tasting is a must. The Botanic Gardens is the most peaceful and scenic spot in the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have supported me along my journey. To make a very long list short I’ll start with God for my life, talents, and creativity. My parents, mentors, teachers specifically Ms. Melodie Brookins, my vocal coach and every person who’s supported me. I have a small network of fellow creatives that I can constantly lean on whenever I need them.
