Meet Cynthia Johnson Smith | Signing and Notary Agent

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Johnson Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My son was the thought process behind this adventure. He pushed and encouraged me to start a notary business years before I could wrap around my head around the thought of it. I wanted to start a business by buying one big building and having battered women and sheltered children in it, with computers for learning and having classes for women to learn how to interview and get their lives back on track. I wanted a janitorial service to keep it clean and security guards to keep everyone safe. But, as the years went by I let that opportunity get away from me. The thought of my own business never left my mind. Business owners ran in my family.
I just had to figure out what I wanted to do. One night I went to bed early, no particular reason I was just sleepy. But in the middle of the night, the notary business came up. I dreamed that I was very successful in what I was doing. In my dream I doing outreach in the community and notarizing everything that came across my desk. I sat straight up in my bed and gave JESUS all praise for opening up my desire and courage to be my own boss. I wanted to be that person, that someone, the community can depend on. Not to scam or over price for service, but be of service and outreach to those who could not get out or had difficulty getting around. I made myself available to come to them. So, ten years later cjsmithnotary LLC was created. I went full speed ahead to get the classes done for certifications that I need, pay all the fees and titles. I”m ready.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a notary service that is mobile. I have set up my website to show the Northern part of Dallas/DFW area that I service. There are many notaries in this area so the compatibility is very high and I won’t say it is easy. because it’s not. You have to become a search engine to get your business off the ground. My business was fully established in 2023. It took me a year to get it right. I was patient. the bible says “be anxious for nothing”. You think you have everything you need at a given point. Months can go by and you think you good to go. Hold on, give it some months to get registered with the state and all the admission fees will start to pour in. I overcame the challenges by taking my time. I did one thing at a time. I took all state required test first. Second I registered with certain licensed agencies to be under their umbrella as a member. Third I searched for jobs for notary service and got registered with them. It takes money to start your own business. You have to invest in yourself. You need equipment, supplies, websites, emails, business address. Never use your own address. Its just business savvy to have a business address corporation to handle all mail and keep you up to date on all legal inquires and fees. Less hassle for you and less paperwork. I want my community to know that I will work for them like a representative. I will take all notaries that are not a court of law document (depending on what it is) and process them. I print, fax, scan and make copies. And I will come to them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a great support system. It involves numerous family members, and certain co-workers. I had others who wanted to have a say so. You know how it goes, you have those who wished you to succeed but really didn’t. You have those who told me good luck with that, but really meant it in a sarcastic way. All of that I want to recognize as my success. I took nothing for granted. But I always kept close to heart Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask and it will given to you, seek, and you shall find, knock and the door shall be open to you. Never forgetting to pray and ask for guidance from GOD.
