We had the good fortune of connecting with Caleb Bogenschutz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caleb, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I think persistence has been one of the most important things that has helped my business grow to what it is today. I run this business on the side, so my time is limited. There have definitely been nights and weekends where I wasn’t exactly motivated to go to the shop to work, but did anyway in order to meet project deadlines. There’s a time to work and a time to relax, of course, but pushing through when it was necessary has really helped my business a ton.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One thing that sets me apart from other woodworkers in my area is that I am willing to take on very challenging custom work. I have recently been approached by a homeowner in a nearby town that needed some custom corbels for both her kitchen and living room in her new home build. Her contractor looked around and was unable to find a shop that could provide these custom corbels. This is what my shop specializes in, so it was the perfect opportunity for me to take on the work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Carthage, Texas is a small town, but there are definitely some gems that are worth visiting for someone new to the town. A brewery recently opened on the square in downtown Carthage and has definitely been a hit. They serve delicious food and locally brewed beer and is such a great place to visit. Staying on the square, Sunflower Mercantile is a great place to drop in for an ice cream cone. As if that’s not enough food, I think T Blanco’s in the nearby town of Lakeport is a must. It’s the epitome of East Texas Tex-Mex food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have come across some incredibly talented woodworkers on Instagram and have been lucky to have had extensive conversations with lots of them. Christian Tierno with Tierno Woodworking, Josh Norko with Northeast Woodworks, and James with JL Contacting & Design are a few of the many woodworkers that I’ve been able to interact with and learn a lot from. There’s no doubt that I would have learned a lot of things the hard way if it wasn’t for them sharing their knowledge and advice.
