We had the good fortune of connecting with Fred Becker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fred, what principle do you value most?
Over Deliver! Because people hire me personally, there is no way for me to separate myself from the business. Therefore, the only way I can sleep at night is to know that I have delivered such a quality service that people are blown away with the overall experience. There is no better feeling than exceeding expectations, and that becomes a motivating factor for us at Becker Magic. I would rather turn down a job (that doesn’t fit our service) than to just do it for the money. When I look at our customer satisfaction surveys, I think this has been a very good strategy for our business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There are many factors at play here. The two most important are “passion and sincerity.” I am a magician/entertainer not because I want to be; it is because I HAVE to be. It isn’t a job, it is who I am, 24/7. This means I am constantly working, even in my sleep I’m dreaming up new ways to do what I do. I try to introduce balance in my life, but at my core I am always chasing magic. Secondly, I view what I do as a service. My focus is on my audience and their needs foremost. Putting them first comes from a very sincere place and I think the audience can sense that and respond to it. Once the show became about sharing the experience rather than “watch me,” things clicked into place. Most of my work needs to pass the “Why Challenge.” I always ask myself, “Why are you doing this? and Why should anyone care?” If I can’t give compelling answers to those questions, it doesn’t make it into the show.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My first thought is food. There are so many unique culinary stops in the Metro-Plex and I wouldn’t want my friends to miss any of them. Those would include but are certainly not limited to; Babes, Hard Eight, La Hacienda Ranch, and Wasabi & Wok. In the city I’d show off the Perot Museum, the Dallas World Aquarium, the Dallas Aboretum and a trip through Deep Ellum and Knox Henderson. At some point I’m sure we’d end up at the Truck Yard. Outside the city: If we are looking for a wild day, I’d head to Six Flags. It is a remarkably good park for rollercoaster enthusiasts. For a more relaxed day I’d go to Grapevine. It has a nice atmosphere to stroll and shop. If it is a weekend, we might look to go to Barn Hill Vineyard for some wine and a cover band. That’s a fun time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Bobbie Becker, my wife and business partner. Bobbie has spent the majority of her professional life traveling the world, performing in all types of venues including the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts with the National Symphony Orchestra. While she has the passion of a political junkie and did work for a former Governor of Oklahoma, her heart has always been in performing. For the last 12 years she has worked professionally with me as part of Becker Magic” flows a bit better. She is an Entertainer / Singer / Magicians Assistant. She says, “I have been blessed to see a large part of the world and visit places I never dreamed I would see, including Israel, Singapore and Antarctica.” She is also co-author of our online course and mentorship program “Gigs On Ships.” In addition to her magic career she performs as a Solo Artist, Consultant, Guest Speaker and Lecturer. In her spare time she runs her own business called MagicGal Makeup and offers advice in the areas of Beauty, Travel and Lifestyle.
