We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kathryn Sarpong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kathryn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
A vet school class mate and I were meeting and discussing how we would do things differently if we owned our own veterinary practice. This conversation eventually resulted in the 2 of us seeking a loan, and opening the first Metro Paws Animal Hospital on Skillman in Dallas. Our focus was to deliver pet care to owners in a way that focused on the whole pet and the desires of the client. We wanted great staff that was respected to help deliver that care. We wanted to balance care with really enjoying what we do which is healing animals.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Metro Paws Animal Hospital is now a group of 3 clinics with 16 fantastic veterinarians and many long term technicians and support staff. The medicine side is easy, but running a small business in multiple locations has been an education by fire of accounting, employee law and regulation!
I learned to ask people around me to help me learn, understand and problem solve. While I cannot know what to do in all arenas, there is usually someone in my network that does know and can help!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bike or walk around White Rock Lake. Get lunch street tacos from Tacos La Banqueta.
Kylde Warren park for games and stop by Nasher for a bit of culture!
Lounge Here for drinks and apps, then dinner at home with our fantastic East Dallas friends.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family has been incredibly supportive of the late nights, hijacked dinner conversations and derailed plans for pet emergencies. Being the husband or child of a veterinarian deserves its own badge of honor. I also want to acknowledge my longterm business partner, Dr. Jennifer Lavender. We created this dream of Metro Paws Animal Hospital and have treated tens of thousands of animals as a team.
