Meet Sam Cumbo | Entrepreneur, Personal Trainer, and Strength and Conditioning Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Cumbo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I was fortunate enough when I first started in the industry to have great mentors. Without great mentors early on in my career, I’m not sure where I would have landed. Having great mentors led me to have understanding of the business world and how to take a passion and turn it into a business. I started out passionate to help people. Passionate to help people be healthy, find their ideal lifestyle, and see the best version of themselves. The thing is, passion only takes you so far. Having great mentors is what allowed me to turn my passion into the business we have today. Things that would have taken me years if I have ever learned them, I knew before even starting our business due to the wisdom and experience from successful mentors. My process became streamlined towards what I was looking to accomplish from listening to those wiser than myself and learning lessons early on in my career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We train all people to reach their physical goals, whether it be muscle gain, fat loss, strength, power development, etc… with a high percentage of our athletes being baseball players. We have become THE training facility in our area for baseball players to get the specific attention needed for their development. From starting with 13-14 year olds primarily, we have now worked with professional athletes, Olympians, and quite a few collegiate athletes. The growth of our training systems to be trusted within professional organizations was one of the more fulfilling accomplishments that we have been able to reach.
Since our training model is vastly different from most training facilities in our area, it was not an easy task. It led us to have to re-educate our community and put ourselves out there knowing that we would be viewed quite different and there would be hesitation. It is for this reason though that we were able to get athletes results when they previously hadn’t been seeing any. It is crucial to trust yourself, what you are doing, and constantly educate yourself to help others to the highest degree possible. Through the constant educational pursuit we have been able to solve problems for people that have been stuck for years without seeing progress.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In our area the best thing to do is to get out into Nature and find a good hike. There is nothing more refreshing on the mind the getting into nature and getting away from technology. Between the nature effect and being able to fully focus my attention on that person without any distractions there is no question. One of my favorite places to go is Letchworth State park. There are a ton of hiking opportunities and incredible views.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Mike Spiegel and Xiomara Colon were two of the strongest mentors when I first started at CRUNCH Fitness. I was able to rise from a personal trainer, to fitness manager, to managing multiple locations pretty quickly from leaning on their expertise, experience, and trust. They were two people who above all else had high moral standards, focused on business through the moral lens of helping others, and providing as much value as possible. Money was always second to helping people and that mentality is what allowed us to see financial growth throughout my life and the business that we have created. Everyone wants to make more money, but with a people first mentality I have been able to see our financial ceiling constantly raising simply from helping as many people as possible.
