We had the good fortune of connecting with April Monterrosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi April, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
It’s amusing how, during interviews, I’m frequently asked about balancing career, family, and personal time. I don’t believe there’s a perfect “balance” to it all. Instead, I find it more practical to choose what makes sense and is beneficial for me in the moment. As I’ve aged, I’ve come to realize that striving for balance often leads to stress and doesn’t yield the desired outcomes. Therefore, I don’t fixate on achieving balance. If something doesn’t align with my personal values and what I envision for my family and myself, I simply choose not to pursue it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As the owner of a lifestyle and travel publication, along with a media business, and holding the role of a radio personality on KLMO 98.9 FM, I am deeply involved in my community in San Antonio, where I serve on various boards. One of my most significant achievements is being recognized as a Texas Legislative Honoree.
My entry into the current business happened serendipitously during my time as a travel writer, stemming from my previous ownership of a spa and esthetics business. Documenting my adventures on social media eventually led to the publication of my first book. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, particularly on a personal level, I take pride in overcoming these hurdles. I firmly believe in the adage that success requires consistent effort, and I have persevered because I understand that the key to success lies in persistent, personal commitment—knowing that no one else will do the work for you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I travel and share that I hail from San Antonio, Texas, people often bring up the Riverwalk and the Alamo. However, the neighborhood I call home on the South side of SA boasts numerous hidden gems. The Mission Reach area showcases the San Antonio River in its untamed beauty, offering glimpses of diverse wildlife and outdoor art. There’s also Confluence Park, an architectural marvel that has earned awards, and The Greenline, featuring a striking silver moon in the midst of a pond. And, of course, our cherished historical Missions, recognized as a World Heritage Site. These lesser-known treasures highlight the rich tapestry of the South side, providing a unique and vibrant experience beyond the more commonly acknowledged landmarks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A special shoutout to my fiancée, whose unwavering patience and support have been constants in all my endeavors. Gratitude to my parents for instilling the drive and values that significantly contribute to my success. Heartfelt thanks to my bonus-children, always ready to lend a hand when needed. I’m also appreciative of all the mentors and business associates for their invaluable support and guidance.
