Meet Meg Tamre | Coffee Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Meg Tamre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After a tough year personally, my husband and I learned how important it is to take charge of our lives and happiness. We wanted to turn our interests into a business that would allow us to explore other cultures, help others, grow a community, and teach our young daughter about the importance of hard work.
My husband, like coffee, was born in Ethiopia. Coffee has always been an important staple in our household and family gatherings. Combining his culture, and my experience in the hospitality industry we decided starting a coffee business would be an exciting adventure we could share as a family.
We did a lot of research on the different options in the business and landed on coffee roasting. There is so much opportunity to enlighten and educate others on the unfair farming processes as well as coffee itself. The coffee community is full of so many thoughtful, hardworking, like-minded people and we are so fortunate to be a part of it. We hope to provide positive contributions to this already amazing community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career in hospitality began at 14 when I started working at a local ice cream shop. I was excited to start a 2nd job in addition to going to high school so I could save for my first car. I instantly realized this was the field I was meant to be in as I loved the fast paced environment and serving my community. At 16 years old, the job opportunities opened up and I quickly started working through different positions and companies across the US.
Working in the hospitality industry can be extremely gratifying but it does not come without it’s share of problems. Long hours, entitled customers, and toxic work cultures inevitably were encountered throughout my career. I learned quickly not to take things personally and how to remove myself from negative situations. I learned so many life lessons while navigating these difficult situations and cannot ignore the impact they have had on my personal growth. If I could share any advice, it would be to always respect yourself and take responsibility for your own health and happiness. The best option is not usually the “easiest” but the outcome will always be gratifying and new opportunities will present themselves.
After working a lengthy career in fast paced restaurant environments, I found myself working in hospitality software. I found renewed passion working to create and develop data driven operators through reporting and analytics. I also surprised myself with an affinity for technology and learning new skills outside of my comfort zone. I now find myself open to exploring new challenges and opportunities building a business from the ground up.
Currently, I have no plans to stop working my full time job while managing my new business. This is a new challenge that I am focused on, especially as the mother to a strong willed little girl. Work life balance is extremely important and I do not want to miss out on any special life moments nor make her feel neglected. My goal is to include her in every step to encourage her personal growth and continue to build a strong family bond. This venture will hopefully open doors to life adventures , while experiencing new cultures and helping others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
DFW is full of tons of great places and people! Grapevine was my first stop when I moved to Texas so I always love to share Historic Main Street with visitors. Wine became a hobby early on and was a driving force in my career. I was part of the opening of Messina Hof Winery and worked there for over two years prior to my current position. Main Street offers some great food, wine and entertainment options. I recommend Tolberts for the chili and live music, Main Street Bistro for the delicious French pastries, and Harvest Hall for the variety of dining and entertainment options.
In Dallas, there is no shortage of dining options. Some of my favorites recently have been Barcelona Wine Bar, Manhattan Project, and Toulouse Cafe. For a high end lunch, I always recommend Mansion on Turtle Creek. On a nice day, I like to explore The Bishop Arts district. The music, the shops, the vibe, everything. Don’t leave without trying the strawberry ice cream at Melt.
As a native Northerner myself, a trip to DFW is not complete without checking out the Forth Worth Stockyards. If you can take the historic train from Grapevine, that is an experience within itself. The shops are fun and full of Texan souvenirs. My daughter loves the petting zoo and watch the longhorns cattle drive. 97 West Kitchen & Bar at the Drover is a great meal option and offers plenty to look at while you wait for your food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am incredibly fortunate to have the support system and cheer leaders that have helped me get to where I am today. My family, friends, and local community have been there for me through some terribly challenging times and I am forever grateful to each and every one of them.
My parents deserve special recognition for always believing in me and making sure my daughter is always taken care of while my husband and I tend to our new business. My personal drive and success is all thanks to the great role models they have been and frequent encouragement to be the best that I can be. It does not matter what they are going through personally or how tired they are, I know I can always count on their support. I know that most people do not have that and I hope they know I am eternally thankful and will never take them for granted.
