We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie “Jay-May” Mayberry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie “Jay-May”, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Saying and speaking affirmations has really changed my life. It’s important for me to say them with energy and emotion so that my mind, body and spirit can follow along. My favorite one to say is “All things are working together for my good”. I’ve faced obstacles and challenges in my life like may others but knowing and believing that all things will work together for my good, helps me realize that any situation that I face can be an opportunity to learn and grow. I believe there is a divine force working in the background and when I relax and speak affirmations like this I allow it to work while I mentally step out the way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently work as an IT Specialist, and have CompTIA Security+ and A+ Certifications. I am a record label owner and rap artist that’s released 6 projects. My new single titled P.E.A.C.E. dropped on May 26th. I have a “Positive Energy” t-shirt line and a property management business. I never want to limit myself to only being this or only being that, so I will always try something new and push myself to go further. That is what makes me different, there are no limits to what I can accomplish and achieve.
When my daughters received their Bachelors degree was one of the proudest moments of my life! I wanted to be an example for them and not give them any excuses for not going to school. During my last few years of the Army, I earned my Associations Degree and Bachelors of Science in Information Systems Management. Then after retiring from the Army, earned a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Media Design.
None of this was easy, it took discipline, sacrifice and dedication to finish and complete classes while working and creating. My time in the military taught me the importance of discipline, motivation and being part of a team. Being a spiritual person that pray and believe all things will work together is the baseline of my life.
What helps in being able to accomplish my goals was having a plan, schedule and sticking to that. When raising our children my wife and I had schedules for them, we are eating at this time, we do these activities at this time, go to bed at this time. Then, we could do our thing around and between that. The military really helped me learn the importance of structure and plans that I continue to use to this day. I have learned many lessons on life’s journey and one of the most recent ones is this, we are all born divine and can have so much potential within ourselves but sometimes let the challenges of life stop us. I have now changed my mindset to seeing each challenge as a happening FOR me and notTO me. Seeing things this way help me get the lesson that should be gained from any situation.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Though I’m a few hours away from Dallas, I have had some extensive visits there. First we going to eat breakfast at Ol’ South Pancake House in Ft Worth, love that place its delicious! Next we going to see some history, to the JFK Museum, and see the Dealey Plaza. Then check out the streets of downtown Dallas because there is so much to see. Depending on what time of the year it is we have to watch either a basketball and hang out with the passionate fans of Dallas. After the game we stay around Victory Park, get some food and drinks at the W and call it a night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife has held me down for 27 years. Her love, support and understanding has been instrumental to where we are now in this life. My two amazing daughters, I’m so proud of you both and love to see you evolve through the years. My parents for setting me up for success and always believing the best for my brother, sister and I. Big shout out to the city of Detroit for helping lay the foundation of my life. There are so many people that I have worked and served with in the Army that helped, encouraged, assisted and been there for me. The military community is pretty tight knit with a common purpose of service, so big shoutout to The Army and all the Veterans that served this nations military.
