We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Satterwhite and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greg, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always had an entrepreneurial sprit! In college, I worked for an apartment locator to earn a little extra cash. Got my real estate license, then showed other students around town to find apartments (Gig ‘Em Aggies – Texas A&M). Later in life, while in grad school at SMU, I heard about a company called Moveforfree.com (basically a moving company joined with an apartment locator to move you for free based on commissions from the apartment referrals). Having some experience in apartment locating, I thought, what a great idea! I didn’t want to be in the moving business, so I came up with the idea to just give part of the referral commission back to the tenant and started a company called FreeRentMoney.com. I thought it was a genius idea of course! It never really blossomed… Later… I graduated from my MBA program and went to work for “corporate America”. Enjoyed it for a while, rose in the ranks of management at various companies, then got tired of working for “the man”. After nearly 20 years, I started looking for a company to buy around the year 2010. Finally found something in 2016 and decided to buy it. I say all of this because, you don’t always need to start something in order to find what you might be called to do. Lot’s of people start businesses and then later sell them. If starting something from scratch isn’t your calling, think about buying an existing business and then make it your own. I wasn’t able to drop everything and start a company as I had to rely on an income to pay my mortgage, kids, etc…
What should our readers know about your business?
Outhouse Tickets is all about taking care of our customers. Our customers are small to medium sized venues and festivals that sell tickets to their events. Have you ever tried to get ahold of ticketmaster or eventbrite to deal with a ticketing issue? Most likely from the ticket buyer perspective it sucked, try that that same level of performance from the venue’s perspective. You can’t call anyone at the larger companies! We pride ourselves in providing very personalized service. I own the company and I normally give out my personal cell phone number to our venue customers so that they can call me with any questions or issues that arise. We are growing and this may change, but I like to keep it to a level that I can still personally go to meet and talk with my venue customers. Even though we are nationwide, I still make it a point to get out and meet the owners of the businesses we support. They are small like we are and I appreciate that!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live near McKinney Texas. I automatically take people out on the square. There is always a great place to eat or drink. Usually some live music on a weekend. McKinney square is the place to be.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, this is a tough one… My dad was an engineer his whole life and helped run the company he worked for. I heard how poorly it was run and what he was doing to help. My brother worked for a large company then later started his own company and was successful for a number of years, but went back to corporate later. I got an MBA and worked the corporate life for too many years fairly happily. But, working in the corporate life eventually dragged me down because I always hated reporting to someone else and working my hardest for the growth of a company that I would never actually be a part of.
Without the support of my wonderful wife, I would never have been able to take the risk and buy a company. She has been the best through this whole endeavor which is now in its 7th year.
I never really had great mentors through this process, but wish I had. I has spoken to numerous individuals looking to buy businesses and am so excited for them. I feel that I never had much help, but I want to help guide and advise others in this journey if they are interested.
