We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Bernal, Natalie Kirby, and Cassie Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, Natalie, Cassie, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Every Witch Way Denton is NOTHING without the local small businesses and artist community. The whole intention is to create a space and platform for local DFW/Denton small businesses and artists to have a space to share their wares and art.
Modern consumerism has turned into mass production and instant gratification. Our market offers an opportunity for consumers to put their money into their community. The impact this makes is monumental for our vendors. A $20-$50 dollar purchase is a drop in an ocean for the monolith corporations, but buying from local vendors makes an immediate and direct impact to the artisans.
Our markets also provide opportunities for networking, collaboration, and wholesale offers. We want our vendors to “grow out” so their work can be shared beyond our boundaries, but we are a place where someone can start, and for us, it’s an honor to be part of that growth.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the name of our market says it all, “Every Witch Way”. Immediately, one can understand that our market isn’t a traditional community market. We focus on niche vendors whose wares and/or art have a spiritual and/or magical resonance in their work. These kinds of products aren’t always welcomed at traditional markets, so it is our intention that our market provides a safe space for vendors who offer something that may be considered extra-ordinary such as potions, spell jars, mojo bags, fixed candles, divination readings, and other odds and oddities.
Our ethos is “An Intersection of All Spiritual Paths: A magical market of unique crafts, art, potions, talismans, divinations and SO MUCH MORE by local creators!”
We are committed to that vision.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our name is Every Witch Way DENTON – so we are going to tell you all we can about this incredible, weird, and wonderful community!
Denton is home to two universities: Texas Woman’s University and North Texas University. This creates a community of different people from different places – many become permanent residents. This also means Denton has a thriving music and art scene, so you can check out local and visiting bands at venues such as Andy’s, Rubber Gloves Studio, Dan’s Silverleaf , Killer Tacos, Harvest House, or Howling Mutt Brewery.
There are also unique shops like Bewitched Denton, Patchouli Joe’s Books and Indulgences, Sleeping Lizards, Salvage Secondhand Shoppe, and our corner mainstay, Recycled Books We also love our plant studios such as True Leaf Studio and The Brown Thumb. For some apparel shopping, we’d have to mention Rose & Thorn Boutique or UNT CoLab. (We, of course, have to mention our market that we host monthly during the spring and fall seasons, but there are other markets hosted by Denton Art and Performance Collaborative (DAPC).
Denton has incredible places to eat and drink, and many that are local brews or carry craft beers such as The Bearded Monk, Denton County Brewing, and Howling Mutt. You can grab drinks at Eastside, Oak Street Drafthouse, Howling Mutt Brewery, or Miss Angeline’s. If you’re not a drinker but want that kind of culture, we’d strongly recommend Kava Culture.
For food – this list could go on forever, so where do we begin? We’ve got Rooster’s, Andaman’s Thai, Komodo Loco, Dix Coney Island, LSA Burger, 940’s, or food trucks like Insurgent or the food trucks at East Side. We can’t forget to mention Juicy Pig for BBQ, and if you’re lucky enough to get a reservation, there’s the EXPERIENCE of Osteria il Muro for some INCREDIBLE and authentic Italian. Don’t forget to grab some ice cream at Beth Marie’s!
If you love craft coffee – Denton has plenty of that too! There’s the classic Jupiter House off the Denton Square, Aura Coffee across the street from UNT, West Oak Coffee, and Golden Boy Coffee.
There are PLENTY of things to do in Denton, so many that we’d recommend you check out Discover Denton to find the current events because they share them each weekend. We have the Jazz and Arts Festival, Dia de Los Muertos festival, car shows, the Denton Community Market, or shows at the Campus theater. We’ve got Free Play, Movie Tavern, and the Chairy Orchard. We don’t want to forget other digs like Ironwood Axe Throwing, Vinyl Lounge, or the Glitterbomb shows over at Rubber Gloves!
I’ve barely touched the surface here, and I would tell my friend that a week wouldn’t suffice – extend your stay. Also, let’s go to the Every Witch Way Market. 🙂
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We have a lot of “Shoutouts” because the success of market is dependent upon the community.
First and foremost, our vendors. We can’t have a market without vendors, and we appreciate the artisans and creators who have the AUDACITY to share their work with the community.
Second, a shout out to the local businesses and organizations such as Howling Mutt Brewery, Rose & Thorn Boutique, The Brown Thumb, Gnome Cones, UNT Colab and the Denton Main Street Association representing the businesses on our historical Denton Square. We have so many incredible small businesses that we are thankful to share street space with once a month.
We also want to shout out to our helps/volunteers: Kassie, Jesse, Taylor, Tracy, and Tyler… those who come out and give their time to help us during the market.
Finally, a HUGE shout out to Bewitched Denton, owners Kacey and Fara Francis-Eusea who have been our market sponsors from the beginning! They’ve been a huge support and believer of our vision, and they go above and beyond supporting our market; they are also wholesale buyers for many of the local vendors, putting their vision into action.
