We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Waldrep and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
With a background as a boutique owner, as well as other small businesses over the years being self-employed was nothing new for me. After successfully tackling infertility and expanding our family I knew I wanted to get back into entrepreneurship and the retail world but in a different sense. Maintaining some flexibility in my schedule for my family and being present for my kids and their needs was and is very important for me. I have a passion for small businesses and for helping those who own and operate them. Knowing the constant needs and struggles of being a store owner I wanted to put my experience to use and help fellow store owners best utilize their time and implement proper marketing techniques to grow and streamline their businesses. Being able to provide financially for my family, have a sense of accomplishment for myself, and helping my clients is what my career is all about and I am so thankful for it!
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business as most do, simply by word of mouth. The first month I had 4 clients. I had no clue where to start as far as pricing, but I knew what they needed help with and how I could make life a little easier for them. I worked around the clock 7 days a week even with a small workload. When I finished client work, I went to work advertising and trying to get more clients. The feedback was amazingly positive and word-of-mouth advertisement started to play into the growth as well. Within 6 months I was up to 30 clients and within a year I had over 70. I had found myself working 6-7 days a week and most days working 12-18 hours. The days were long, but I love what I do, and I refused to let my clients’ results suffer so I pushed thru day and night to get it done. Even thru the sleepless nights I still LOVED my job. After months of this though I knew, I couldn’t keep doing it all on my own. After 2 years solo, I finally hired my first contractor to help with the workload. Now five years in I have 5 contractors, so 6 of us total and over 110 clients all across North America. We are getting ready to expand our services and take on more clients and contractors in the new year. After all this time I still LOVE what I do. It is an everchanging industry that definitely keeps me on my toes.
My clients feedback means the world to me and after 5 years and over 700 clients I’ve had TWO unhappy clients. This is something I pride myself on. Our plans are not one size fits all and we are reachable to our client’s day and night to meet their needs and expectations. It is one thing to hire a marketing or advertising company, but it is another to hire someone with a background in your same industry. I treat each of my clients’ businesses as if it were my own and I believe that has been one of my keys to success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being born and raised in Fort Worth and having family land in the country an hour away I know a lot of great little spots all around town. For a girl’s day in the city, you can’t go wrong with Mexican food and margaritas on the patio of Joe T Garcia’s. I’m a sucker for brunch so we would definitely stop in to Ellen’s in Dallas or BB Butcher’s at Clear Fork. On most Sunday afternoons you can find me on the patio of Stumpy’s on Lake Granbury enjoying Buffalo Caesar tacos, chips and salsa, and watching my kids feed the fish.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve always been driven to do more, be more, and accomplish more. Every time I achieve something or even get close to a goal, I like to push the bar a little bit further out of reach. I think my parents supporting my desire to work at a young age is definitely something that played a role in my longing for success. I got my first payroll job at the age of 14. I worked in my church office, cleaning, answering phones, doing really anything they needed me to do. Even before that, as young as 9 or 10 I was hustling in the holiday season typing (yes, on a typewriter) price lists for my “gift wrapping business” and I would swindle family and friends into hiring me. Some say they truly loved the service, and I am forever grateful to everyone who obliged and went along with my hair-brained money-making ideas even at a young age. I think every bit of that played a huge role in my desire for entrepreneurship and always pushing myself to achieve more.
