We had the good fortune of connecting with Thelma Osei Owusu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thelma, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe that one of the most important factors to being successful is self-development. Self-development strengths your core. Nourishing my strengths – mind, body, soul, and spirit helps me to be myself in a health manner. Taking steps to improve myself has contributed my business.

Being caught between two cultures as a 1.5 immigrant generation has its challenges and rewards. There is bicultural stress of cultural differences, code switching, social behaviors and integration of the rules. This would cause one to be in a state of culture shock because of all the differences and trying to find balance. I learned to live in both spaces and accept multicultural theology.

During my training in chaplaincy, I was able to address unresolved grief through using the chaplaincy process, reading, counseling, self-reflections, and writing. This increased myself knowledge and addressed unresolved grief. The awareness of motives, abilities, and feelings has helped direct me as a business leader.

As a serial entrepreneur, I do land real estate, provide informed grief sessions, sell specialty bridal fabrics, and help create succession plans. The time invested in self-development and self-knowledge assisted me to define my goals and life’s vision. Along with business knowledge and skills, success is more achievable. I knew that I wanted to do something that gave those with similar backgrounds as myself an opportunity to own land. Gaining access to land real estate industry has enable me to help others navigate.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Thelma Owusu provides a plethora of vast services. We offer but are not limited to classes on land ownership, the actual process of land purchasing as well as land investing and flipping. We hold monthly panels called “Land Moves” to discuss various topics on land. On the ministry side, we focus on providing grief support for those who have experienced a loss. We also provide differentiated leadership focuses on self-development and effective leadership. The opportunity for healthy ministry is what’s offered. Wise words to live by “Get some healing so you do not bleed on your congregants.”

I continue to press forward regardless of challenges and intentionally seek out those with the knowledge I am seeking. I sought out a professional land real estate leader to help me navigate the field. All businesses have their challenges but do not give up. Reassess what needs to be improved and try again.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In this case I am being bias of course, I would say visit Ghana. Apart from Ghana, being my country of origin, there are many reasons I would encourage a visit. It is a peaceful place with rich heritage, culture, and hospitality. In Ghana has an abundance of natural beauty, and remote wilderness.

The first African country to gain independence from Britain. The capital Accra has Kwame Nkrumah Park and Mausoleum, The National Museum, and the Legon Botanical Gardens await thrill-seekers. I won’t forget the beaches and the waterfalls, like the Tagbo Falls. Ghana has over 340 miles of Atlantic coastline.

Ghana has many castles and forts such as Cape Coast, St. George’s d’Elmina, and Christiansborg. There is the market which is busy and thriving, national park and more.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say that my faith in Christ is the key foundation. Being able to extract the principle in the Bible and apply it in my personal life hep. An example is the parable of the talents, taking risk, using business skills and learning how to invest.

The next thing is my beloved mother, who transitioned to heaven in 2020. I am blessed beyond measure, to have had a mother who was so shepherding. She truly invested and developed each child. She left us with a rich faith heritage, wisdom on navigating life and a solid succession plan. I believe with all my heart, that God loves me because of the rare jewel I called my mother.

The last thing that has helps secure my journey thus far is a book called Marginality : The Key to Multicultural Theology. This book helped me accept myself as an immigrant and affirmed no one has to be the same. The book is generally described as a framework that justifies and undergirds development of contextual theologies without becoming itself dominating. Lee aims to address the dilemmas of contextual theology, not by moving one or another group from the margin to the center, but by redefining marginality itself as central.
