Meet James Samuels | Owner | Contractor

We had the good fortune of connecting with James Samuels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting this business wasn’t necessarily easy. I had just got laid off due to a nationwide pandemic and the clock was racing against me. I wanted to do something I was good at an enjoyed doing in my spare time. I’ve been taking care of my vehicle since I was 15 years old, and I knew the ins and outs of making a vehicle look like it just came off the showroom floor. This is what I’d do until I got back on my feet. I would detail cars but make it easier on clients. I didn’t have a lot of money saved up to invest in a location so I decided I would take my services to their doorstep. The next step would be naming my company and presenting it. I decided to go with J Squared Contracting in thoughts that someday I would pass this down to my son, who shared a name with me, J Squared it was.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe the one thing that sets me apart from others as I mentioned earlier is my drive. I possess this urge deep inside of me that pushes me to go get whatever I set my sights on. I know that nothing in this world is going to be handed to me, I have to go out and get it. Pride, and respect are two values that I hold close to my chest. Without those two values my drive is nothing. I take pride in what I do, and I lead by example by showing respect to each and every person I come into contact with. I got my first job when I was 15, I told myself I would work hard and show up so I would have extra money to do the things that I wanted to do. Now let’s be honest, I was in high school and the things I wanted to do had no potential to grow my savings. With that being said, I held that job until I left for college. While working, I always wanted to go the next step. I wanted to learn what my boss knew and how they learned it so that I could move up into that position once they moved on. This set me apart from my peers. Everyone I worked with in these jobs were here to earn a check. Don’t get me wrong I was there for a check as well but more than that I was there for knowledge to grow in any workplace.
Nothing I’ve done has been easy. I was told that nothing worth having comes easy. If you know me, you know I’ve had a rough go at this thing we call life, but my downfalls and shortcomings are what made me into the hardworking man I am today. I hope that I can instill the same kind of drive that I possess in anyone that I come across but mainly I want my son to want to follow in my footsteps.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A weeklong trip to my city, there’s so many things to do in the Dallas Fort Worth area and I would love to be able to guide the way.
Let’s start on a Sunday, Brunch at Vidorra in deep Ellum would be the best place to start. Surrounded with good people, good drinks and even better food. I’m sure the cowboys will be playing so we could run down to Back Yard and catch the games to solidify the day. Monday comes around and it’s just about time to get out and have some fun. I like to start my days with a good workout, so just to see what Texas has to offer we could go for a hike at Cedar Ridge Preserve in Dallas. Tuesday we could check out a concert and have some drinks and food at Lava Cantina in the colony. Wednesday we could take the boat out for some fishing on Lake Tawakoni or even do some hunting. Thursdays I would recommend checking out Standard Service in Rockwall to watch Thursday night football on the big screen. Fridays are for country dancing and a little honky tonk. There are a few options for this: Hooky in Fort Worth, Southern Junction in Royse City, Red River in Dallas, or the Stock Yards in Fort Worth. All great options for a little Two Steppin’. Saturday is the best day to be outside, Clyde Warren Park has so many things to offer from live music, to yard games.
That would be a great week in the DFW, in my opinion.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to use this portion of this interview to shoutout my wife, Amanda Samuels. She’s the one that has stood behind me, career change after career change after career change. She knows the drive I possess, and she brings that out in me, even when I don’t believe in myself, she’s been there to lift me up and give me the push I need to move forward. When I started this business, we didn’t know I would reach as many people as I have. From her sharing my Facebook posts, to handing out business cards to her friends and coworkers she has always been there for me in the background and supporting me in making my business into what it is today. And for that, I’m thankful to have such a supportive partner as her in this.
