We had the good fortune of connecting with Cookie Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cookie, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want to always be remembered as someone who created space for LEGIT hidden gems. The foundation of this platform has not only been to unpack and clean up our sh*t, but to do it through the lens of those who don’t eat, breathe, and sleep social media or have major platforms. Sometimes I think we forget the biggest contributors to the culture are those who live their lives in raw “unconventional” ways. I’ve had sex workers, people that have battled addiction, creatives who have been transparent about suicide, and most importantly done a lot of extraordinary things….behind the scenes thanklessly.

If you prefer shaking
tables that others fight for a seat at, you are my people.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I had imposter syndrome for roughly a long time concerning this launch. I felt I needed to be signed off on by somebody of influence or a large following which looking back was goofy as hell! I had to own the fact that people connect with my perspective and I’m THEE best shoulder to lean on. I’m needed in this space. The name of the podcast literally changed about three times. The universe knew I needed to not only meet my audience where they were, but myself as well-cleaning out my “dirty bag”. Podcasting currently gets such a bad rap, because for some goofy reason, we have this unhinged high value men/women, who pays the bills, submitting, and fake relationship guru era that’s turning people off.

There’s a lot of people with microphones and a platform that need therapy. What my audience responds well to is me being authentic about my mental health during dark seasons, my insecurities with motherhood, the fact that my track record for dating has some god awful turns, and what it is to be a black woman in this corporate and political climate. How can I be trusted with the stories of others when you know nothing about me? I love hot topics occasionally in the media, but my experiences are just as relevant and valid. My audience gets Cookie.

I wouldn’t say there’s a secret to my success, because I’m not there yet, but what’s keeping me going is knowing I’m creating a community of grown folks who have been there, done that, and just want to sort it out and get a good laugh in the process. These past few years life really whooped everybody’s a*s. So let’s navigate our new normal together.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m biased about the fact that Kitchen and Kocktails has become a second home-it is literally three doors down from the podcast studio. It’s my pre-game before recording. Two blocks further up the road is the Monarch. If I want one hitter quitter drinks and nice corporate conversations, that’s my spot. The complimentary champagne makes me feel like I’ve arrived. Lol With me being more seasoned, I’m not a big club girl, but Lava Cantina in the Colony feels like home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This platform really came from the nudging of friends who braved my long-winded lives and endless IG stories! I jokingly always said the private conversations with my friends needed to be recorded, but a podcast was never on my mind! I just knew we had unique relatable experiences and maybe somebody would feel less of a hot mess if they knew they were in good company. I haven’t been in Dallas, but under two years so I really have to shout-out the some of the ladies of the Dallas Social Butterfly group. It was how I get introduced to the social scene in a lot of ways and the girls have supported and embraced my platform. *waves to Rosa and Veronica*
