Meet David and Shaunda | DJ and Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with David and Shaunda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Shaunda: We realized that there was a gap in the house and techno scene in our area. We wanted to create a safe space for people from all walks of life to enjoy similar tastes in music and culture. I had been working with different production and festival companies for a while. After I started feeling more comfortable with curating events, I teamed up with David.
David: I had been performing around town for a few years at that time. Solidifying a foundation for our sound and dance community was clearly a goal that needed to be expanded upon. Making the shift form a hobby to an actual business was definitely the right direction.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
David: Our style was built with the foundations of House and Techno which is used to create our blend of the two. You always see bios of a lot of artists with “pushing the boundaries” or “reinventing the genre” but you don’t hear it in their sets or productions. We are instead focused on making and sharing good music that truly defines us. Signing our debut track “Casual Drip” on Matt Sassari’s label Panterre Musique has definitely been our highest point so far as well as the follow up EP we also released with them called Void. The support has is phenomenal from the team’s manager Stephen Macias to say the least. We still anticipate many years of hard work in music business. All in all, it’s more than music, it’s feeling.
Shaunda: It hasn’t always been easy, especially being a duo. We’ve had to overcome most obstacles as a unit, which can be difficult if we have different opinions about what needs to be done. Those challenges have better equipped us for what is to come and really focus on what can make or break us. A major lesson that I have personally learned is being patient. While we have accomplished so much in such a short amount of time, we roll with the tides and stay humble.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Shaunda: Foodwise, we would probably grab some breakfast at BuzzBrews or Cindi’s NY Deli. Serious Pizza would be a good place for lunch or dinner. If we wanted to get in some good Deep Ellum people watching, I’d have to go with Postino. As far as nightlife goes, I think we can both agree that we would end up at It’ll Do before the night was over. If we have one of our more adventurous friends, you would probably see us at Jack’s House or Voltage dancing into the night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shaunda: I would love to give a major shoutout to Vince Lepeltier, the owner and organizer of Fantasy. He brought us on to his team when we first started playing events. He has gone above and beyond to help us stay connected in the area as well are providing us with the experience of hosting events. I cannot thank him enough for the time that he has put into helping develop Mofax.
David: There’s honestly so many to give recognition to that have pushed us this far. The support of those around us is immaculate. Shockingly enough, this is only the beginning. For those in the Mofax Family, you know who you are. Shoutouts to Subtek, Fantasy, and RealMusic Events.
