We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Rubio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea behind my business is actually followed through by a dream of mine. Since at a very early age of 6 years, I always loved anything and everything about fashion. I would design, draw and put together an outfit for certain events and what I would envision myself wearing. Growing up throughout my school years, I would turn my “boring” everyday black polo and khaki pant school uniform and turn it into something fun and unique by adding clothing pieces and jewelry together. Friends would tag along and join me in being able to express themselves and be different, I would never gate-keep where my items were from or where it can be purchased, I loved being able to help and build their confidence! Senior year was approaching and that’s all my peers would talk aboutm since then I knew I wanted to attend fashion school, and easily got accepted to University of Art Institute; however my parents didn’t agree. I didn’t attend fashion school and had to pursue in something else. Fast forward to now, I graduated with Bachelors in Marketing and Management KNOWING I can coo-relate my degree into opening my own clothing business and be my own boss by using my resources that I learned throughout college. In year 2021, I felt that I was stable enough to finally go after my dreams, be able to open my boutique for women’s clothing, shoes, accessories and self-defense keychains. My whole life I knew exactly what I wanted, and now I’m going for it,

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After graduating with my Bachelor’s in marketing and management, you would think that you would begin your career in what you studied for. WRONG, not in my case. Unfortunately, many jobs require you to have much more experience and knowledge and I was only fresh out of school and needed to provide for my toddler. I couldn’t wait much longer for approval of other marketing jobs so I took a position I already knew I was accepted to, being in the mortgage field. I worked as a Wire Assistant for 2 years and was promoted internally as a Wire Reviewer. My role was auditing documents, reviewing every file to make sure all files are ready to pass and send over to banks, so that clients can close on their home and get their keys! I was at my previous job for 2 years and 11 months in total until the lay-off happened in May 2022. The interest rates started to go up, covid caused a decrease in work-load having no choice but to lay-off half the company nation-wide. This bump in the road let me to start working on my boutique full-time and be able to fully dedicate my time on creating content for my social media pages and websites. The lessons I’ve learned throughout this whole experience is to not be afraid to try different things, even if they do not relate to your goals. You can always make time for your dreams, do not let them slip off your fingers. We have 24 hours overall, use them wisely and make that time to go after what you truly want! We really only have one life to live, make use of it! I spent so much time tackling down these degree’s, making sure I learn the in’s and out’s of the business prospects, different career path but never lost sight on my dream, opening my own boutique.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Normally, I would be the friend that takes people out for adventures and all the good spots! I would show them all of Dallas and the night-life. For certain, we would attend a nice outdoor, fun and upbeat place that serves brunch and MIMOSAS. We would then proceed to deep ellum to off-the-cuff and have some drinks there. On a everyday basis I would spend my time on YELP and look up nice places to visit, see the Margaret Hill bridge, Klyde Warren, ATT district, Museum or art exhibition, Korean markets, anything that is fun! I also love to walk around little strips such as Arlington and walk-around in the new build stores. My favorite thing is go to Target and get lost while sipping on some Starbucks if not Home goods and see what seasonal trends are in. I’ve always been the go-to person in places that people would want to go see. However as of lately, I’ve been a home-body with my child, if not we attend parks and snag on some boba tea, watch movies every Tuesday for $5 movies and enjoy our time wisely.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give my full recognition and shout-out to Samantha Martinez! I true role-model and business woman. This woman went through the whole college process with me and both graduated with Bachelor’s. If it wasn’t for her strive and push, I wouldn’t have been motivated enough to follow through on things. Everyday if not every other day, she would call me to make sure I’m on track, If I’ve studied, what my progress was; she would make sure I’m on task! That’s the type of person Sam is, she wants you to succeed, for others to succeed overall. Now, Sam has her successful body sculpting business that she does full-time and mentors/trains people to certify them and is now graduating with her Master’s degree! Samantha receives my upmost and full respect and recognition, she has been truly a blessing in disguise.
