We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Martin, CP, FAAOP and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

As a clinical prosthetist, I found that my patients (amputees) weren’t limited by their amputations as much as they were limited by the lack of technology available. Prosthetics has certainly come a long way in recent years with microprocessor controlled joints, sensor integration, and the like. But the socket interface – the part of the prosthetic that holds the device onto the body – is antiquated. The state-of-the-art conventional prosthetics are fundamentally not much different than a wooden socket from the 1800’s, with the exception that itthey are is made of more advanced materials such as carbon fiber, inare lighter, and simpler to fit and fabricate. But, the core biomechanics of how itthey encapsulates the residual limb has minimal difference to its historic counterpart. The challenges that plagued amputees many years ago andare some of the same challenges that plagues amputees today – heat, sweating, discomfort in the brim, unforgiving pressures within the rigid socket, etc. The vast majority of amputees self-proclaim that their quality of life is limited by discomfort. A few years ago I was invited by NASA to help create Iron-Man-Like exoskeleton suits for space and military applications. What I created and discovered through those programs became the foundation for counterintuitive new methods of connecting man and machine with compliant/dynamic materials, and what became the Socket-less Socket™. I was able to transition that know-how into a new way of fitting prosthetics that fits more like sneakers, and launched the Socket-less Socket in 2015. Since then, thousands of amputees from around the world have regained quality of life through newfound comfort thanks to the Socket-less Socket™ technology.

I strongly believe that we at Martin Bionics have been given an opportunity, and responsibility, to make comfort accessible to all amputees. Founding Martin Bionics was birthed out of that mission.
