Where are you from and how has it impacted you?

Even if you are from the same neighborhood as someone else, you might still be coming from different places. Where you are from is a complicated question and it elicits complicated, but interesting and thought-provoking responses. We’ve shared some of those responses below.

I am originally from Dallas, Texas, and my upbringing shaped not only who I am as a person but also the way I show up as a therapist. Growing up in this city, I experienced both the beauty and the challenges of living in a diverse community. I saw firsthand how access to resources, cultural understanding, and supportive spaces could make or break someone’s ability to thrive. Read More>>

I’m originally from Memphis, Tennessee, where I first learned the meaning of strength and tenacity. Some of my fondest memories are waking up before sunrise on Sundays to sell newspapers with my grandmother, shelling peas, cleaning chitlins, and many days tending to the horses with my grandfather and my cousins. He called us “Soldiers.” Those early mornings taught me the value of hard work, sticking together,, and commitment doing things the right way. I am from a small city called Kenner, La about 10 minutes outside of New Orleans. Growing up wasn’t too tough but it definitely paved the way for me to become the hardworking woman and business owner I am today. I made a promise to myself that I’d give my daughter the life I always wanted as a little girl. Being in a 3bd house full of people and not having your own space/room will definitely motivate you to want more in life. I started working at 15 just to have things I saw other kids/pre teens with that my mom couldn’t afford to provide for me. I worked non stop and kept my grades up graduating at #15 in my class. My younger self is definitely proud of me now because I never gave up. Read More>>
