Meet Trace Schwerman | Doctor of Physical Therapy

We had the good fortune of connecting with Trace Schwerman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trace, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

Hi! I am Trace Schwerman, PT, DPT, ECHM and owner of Enduring Home Solutions. This business was born on my living room couch. My sister, who is an occupational therapist, and my mom were visiting for the weekend and we were discussing our recent challenges trying to help aging family members and patients we have been working with.

My sister shared a story about her husband’s grandmother and how she was so fearful of showering and now she was only showering twice a week. It was heartbreaking to listen to. The family eventually got a remodel completed and my sister was able to give suggestions for making it as personalized and cost effective as possible. The thing we realized is that these stories are very common and we have the knowledge and expertise to help.

I have heard so many stories about how people “fight” with their homes to get what should be a simple task completed. These stories have also led to learning about some very creative strategies that people have come up with. Overall, we believe that the remodel industry has an expectation that the homeowner will adapt to the changes they make to the home instead of modifying the home to meet the needs of the individual. It was after this conversation with my sister, that I felt a responsibility to proactively help people make their homes safer before an injury occurs and bring a therapist’s perspective to the remodel industry. I want to help people create a haven of comfort and safety within their homes.

Soon after starting this business, my sister Kendall Cox, OT, ECHM has joined me and we are co-owners of Enduring Home Solutions. It’s been so much fun growing this family owned business with my sister.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

At Enduring Home Solutions, we are home accessibility and safety specialists.  We utilize a combination of Home Safety Assessments and Home Modification Consultations to help people live safely and confidently within their homes. The thing that sets us apart from many of the other remodel companies is that we are a team of therapists that have gone through specialized training related to home modifications. Most people only learn about physical and occupational therapists after an injury has occurred but we have a wealth of knowledge that we want to share with people and work in a more proactive role.

Starting this business has had its difficulties and late nights. I am very proud of where we are today and thankful to the customers who entrusted us with their homes and their lives. We continue to offer free education like fall prevention strategies and equipment on our social media accounts.  The home modification field is very new in Texas and we are proud to be a part of this exciting and impactful industry that will improve the long-term health of Texans. Home modifications are intended to create a home that will work for you and not against you and we believe having an accessibility specialist like Enduring Home Solutions on your remodel team will make that possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

As a husband and father of 3 kids under the age of 5, it is safe to say we do not explore the city as much as we used to. I really like the Stockyards though. Also, my wife loves to two step which means I love to two step. There is a lot of history and culture that is present in the Stockyards and it’s a great place to visit during the day or night to experience the Old West.

Additionally, Trinity Park in downtown is a great place to have a lazy afternoon. The Fort Worth Dream Park is located within Trinity Park and it is a place where kids of all abilities can play. It is wheelchair accessible, has adapted swings for children with low muscle tone and many other amenities designed to provide a sensory rich environment. It is a great place to take your kid. After they run out all their energy, get some food to-go from one of my favorite restaurants, Rodeo Goat near west 7th, and picnic in the park.

There are many great restaurants in the Fort Worth area, but Rodeo Goat is consistently at the top of my list to get a meal day or night. It has a great laid back feel and is filled with people from all walks of life. I more often than not, go for one of the battle burgers. The creativity that goes on between those buns is awe inspiring.

Lastly, If I were going to spend a week in Fort Worth, Texas I would really focus on taking on the relaxed personality that the city has. Do one thing each day and let go of the hassle that happens in most of our daily lives.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is too much credit that people are owed for where I am today. I had a very zig zagged path to where I stand today and I am sure I shocked a few people. My wife is extremely supportive and she is a force in our house. I could not be where I am without her holding down our house as well as she does. My parents are not only clients but have been very supportive and willing to share their experience as adult children that are now caregivers. I have so many colleagues within the therapy space that have been nothing but supportive and echo the need for our services. Last but not least, our clients that we have served and will serve in the future continue to teach us so much. Their experiences continue to fuel our motivation to modify homes so Texans can live safely and confidently.
