Starting and growing a business is hard, but often deciding to start the business in the first place is even harder. We asked some successful entrepreneurs from around the community to open up to us about how they thought about starting a business.
Cara & Chirs Burk | Filmmakers & Photographers
I feel like to personalize it a little, it should read “What was your thought process behind starting ANOTHER business?” I have already started 3 businesses in my life, all 3 photography businesses and the first 2 failed miserably. It was not easy to decide to start another business after 2 failures. But it has proven to be SO worth it… I have been a photographer for well over 10 years, it is what I have my degree in, but it wasn’t until a little over a year ago that I really realized my true passion. My husband actually pointed me in the direction of videography and filmmaking and since then the love for my camera and this art has deepened beyond what I ever could have imagined. Read more>>
Macy Gilson, M.S. CCC-SLP | Children’s Author & Disability Advocate
By education and profession, I am a pediatric speech language pathologist and have the privilege of working with children with a multitude of diagnoses on a daily basis. These diagnoses include autism spectrum disorders, speech/language disorders, hearing loss, physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities and other developmental disorders. In working with so many amazing families, I have cultivated a passion for not only treating their impairments but sharing their stories. In June 2019, I began Macy Gilson Co, an online community that is committed to providing resources and support for families with children with disabilities. In just one year, we have grown to over 20,000 people and I believe our strength is in our willingness to encourage one another through both trial and triumph. Read more>>
Steve Gamel | Writer, Editor, & Owner of Edit This
There were several reasons for starting my own business. For starters, I loved the freedom and flexibility to work with a variety of small businesses and individuals and provide them with a service they could trust and rely on for years down the road. I had gotten to know so many small-business owners over the years, and I always appreciated the pride and passion they had for their particular craft. I have the same passion for writing and editing, particularly the storytelling aspect, and it simply made sense to go out on my own. Secondly, I felt a service such as mine was sorely lacking in today’s environment. Business owners want to communicate with clients, spark engagement, and build trusting relationships. One of the best ways to do that is with unique and authentic written content. Read more>>

Grant Goodrich | Video Producer & Content Creator
I started my company as a sole proprietorship during my sophomore year of high school. Starting my business was more of a necessity than anything, especially at that moment of my life. My parents were hesitant to believe I could make a career out of my passion/hobby, that is video production, filmmaking, photography, etc. Founding my company was a way for me to prove, to both my friends and family, that I could have a successful future in video production. Before I knew it, I landed my first clients and my company took-off! Read more>>

Demeshia Booker | Author and Empowerment Speaker/Coach
I was at home one night completely broken and drowning in my own tears. I got up to go to the kitchen and didn’t realize that a package had been delivered, it was my Master’s degree. I guess it arrived earlier that day and one of my girls opened the door for the package. I decided a few months earlier I wasn’t going to participate in the ceremony, and I hadn’t even thought when the degree would be mailed. But when I opened that package and saw my name, I knew I was unstoppable. I was encouraged by my own perseverance and my spirits were lifted. At that point, I decided to start my blog and share my story with women. My blog reached and impacted so many women, quickly I saw the bigger picture and launched my brand. My brand’s purpose is to Inspire, Encourage and Empower women of all walks of life. Read more>>
Lateria & Aubri Young | Owner of Botanical Skincare Brand
My inspiration stemmed from my 8 year old daughter Aubri Jaiel. I wouldn’t be the leader I am today if it wasn’t for her…She has provided me with so much, she is leader, a achiever, a Explorer and has so many other beautiful positive qualities…it is only right to honor her in such a beautiful light…(I feel that she has given me so much, that it is only right to build a legacy for her and those that come after her.) When we launched our brand in February 2019 we knew wanted to offer luxurious botanical products that not only helps illuminate your skin but also is beneficial to your health. (What you use on the outside of your body absorbs into your body) This is why we focus on educating…Aubri and I believe it is EXTREMELY important to know what you’re using on your body and why your using specific ingredients.
