The Risk Series: how do you think about risk?

Risk is the most common topic that comes up in our conversations with entrepreneurs and so each week we ask entrepreneurs to talk to us on the record about how they think about risk.

Risk-taking is unavoidable in life and business. For us the key comes down to, ‘What’s riskier, staying where we are or trying this new thing?’ In most situations, we figure that the worst-case scenario is that you simply go back. Read More>>

When it comes to taking risks I always think about looking back on my life when I’m older. I think about whether I’d see me never taking risks and staying stagnant or following my gut and seeing how it turned out.
So now when my gut says that it may be scary, but it feels right I follow that feeling. I moved to a new state and didn’t know anyone, I’ve started new careers and took chances on so many other opportunities. I’ve seen success and failure in all I’ve done, but the one person I can always count on is me. Read More>>

I love adventure! I also love stability… Somehow I want both of these things at the same time. For me, I believe in God and believe God has a calling on all of our lives. I believe we are to be good stewards, to prepare and be wise with what He has given us. But I also know we are called to walk by faith and not by sight. There are some real tensions in these ideas. But at the same time they make perfect sense. God provides stability. Therefore, I can trust Him. God also seems to be adventurous and fun. In John 10:10 Jesus says “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came so they may have life and have it abundantly.” Read More>>

I believe to truly LIVE you must take chances. Every great opportunity in my life stemmed from taking a risk. When I started The Cat Room Recording Studio, I bet my life savings on that business. Each new experience at the studio leads to another exciting opportunity! Read More>>

The world of cosmetology is undeniably a realm of both creativity and risk. While I would not change my career path for anything, I have come to understand that the challenges inherent in this industry are not for the faint-hearted. Throughout my journey, I have encountered unkindness from various quarters, whether it be an instructor who consistently targeted me or a peer who failed to embody the camaraderie one would expect from a friend. In this competitive landscape, finding loyal allies and mentors can feel like an uphill battle, and the “dog-eat-dog” mentality is all too prevalent. Read More>>

When it comes to creating a business, it all starts with a vision, but to bring that vision to life you have to take risks. Taking risks scares us, which is normal, but without taking risks, we will never know whether we will fail or succeed at something. It’s always a 50/50 chance. For my life/ career, taking risks has taught me lessons, good and bad, meaning it has led me to succeed and fail at things. But I never let my failures outweigh my successes. For example, if I had never taken the risk to spend 2/3 of my savings on a camera, my business would not be up and running today. Read More>>

I think risk should be approached with open arms. When I first started my career in photography, I was very reserved and didn’t have any intentions of networking and taking chances. As I grew in my career, I began to realize that closed mouths don’t get fed. I began to reach out to everyone, network with everyone, and accept opportunities I normally wouldn’t accept. Read More>>
