We had the good fortune of connecting with Soheila Agwuh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Soheila, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all started with my third pregnancy and I was searching for a moisturizer for my growing belly. Also, my husband and children have eczema and I was needing a non-toxic moisturizer to soothe their skin when it is inflamed and dry. I tried a few name brand skin care products and I wasn’t satisfied with the results nor the ingredients that they were made of. After talking with my husband about it, we decided to do some research and find natural ingredients that were great for skin and come up with something ourselves.
We took a portion of our tax return and invested in bulk amounts of butter, oils, and other plant derived ingredients. I experimented with different formulas in our kitchen and created an amazing body butter that was non toxic, looked, smelled, and felt great. It was the perfect moisturizer for the stretching skin on my baby bump with the unexpected benefit of reducing the appearance of stretch marks I already had for years previously. It definitely made my pregnancy more comfortable. My whole family was using it since it was the only thing that soothed their eczema, moisturized their skin, and was totally safe for our young children, including our newborn.
We started giving samples away to get feedback and people started coming back asking for more and offering to pay for it! One of the most surprising reviews we received was from one of my husband’s coworkers. She had put it on her dog’s cracked and bleeding paws and she said it worked wonders for him and she didn’t have to worry about him licking it off due to the natural ingredients. We knew we had something then!
What should our readers know about your business?
Mondiah Essentials is a skincare company dedicated to offering non-toxic, yet effective products that are suitable for all skin types. What sets us apart in the skin-care industry is that our products are plant-based even down to the scents we use. We believe in being transparent and educating our consumers.
We are most proud that not only do our customers see positive results with our products, but they enjoy using them as well as a form of self-care. We started as a hobby in making products for our family and friends. The demand grew to the point that we wanted to join the market and Mondiah Essentials was born. A lot of research, experimenting, trial and error, chance taking, and self-funding was involved in growing our brand. It was fairly easy to develop our business because of the passion behind what we create. We believe in what we do and that drives our productivity. The hardest part is overcoming imposter syndrome and feeling like you don’t deserve to compete in the same spaces as household name brands and companies. We just stayed consistent in pursuing our vision, understanding that there’s always room for your goals and dreams if you’re dedicated enough not to give up. The process of entrepreneurship has taught us that if you can find ways to be creative, then you can really enjoy building a brand. You don’t have to know everything upfront because you will learn as you go. Don’t let mistakes stop you and use them as an opportunity to learn.
Ultimately we want the world to know that it is possible to have skin care products that are clean, but also effective. Our products are not specific to any particular demographic and we believe that healthy skin is for everyone. Our line of products is growing and we have new releases soon to come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
DFW is one of the fastest growing metroplexes in the country. Being born and raised here, we are still learning all of the amazing things to do. If you’re looking for fine dining, Monarch restaurant is one of the best dining experiences the city has to offer. If you’re looking for good drinks, fun and games with friends then you want to check out Punch Bowl Social or Backyard. Riding the M-line trolley through uptown and hopping off at West Village for shopping and dining or Klyde Warren Park for a good time and good food trucks in the fresh outdoors. If you’re looking for possible celebrity sightings, you may want to check out Ocean Prime restaurant for happy hour or Kessaku for some good sushi and toast some cocktails to a beautiful view of the Dallas skyline. We love it here!
Accomodations for a week long stay should include Virgin Hotels Dallas for a hip bar and dining experience, stylish guest rooms, and fun at the rooftop pool and bar.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout-out Chris and Crystal Ford. They are both entrepreneurs with a focus in wealth building and real estate. They have been among Mondiah Essentials’ biggest supporters; giving sound advice, encouragement to follow our vision, and opportunities to network and grow our brand.
