We had the good fortune of connecting with Zariyah Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zariyah, why did you pursue a creative career?
Pursuing a creative career is what makes me a better human overall. Being a creative person teaches me to walk in life having empathy for others. Empathy allows me to tell the stories of others and the stories that I have lived with more authenticity and care. Living in this world I encounter the good and difficult things that it brings me. Processing those events in the moment, allows me to practice through my craft whether it’s acting, visual arts, or filmmaking. I have that blessing to be able to just let it all out. I feel like having artistic expression is a part of my purpose in life.
As well as witnessing reactions of people to my work. Those of different ages, personalities, genders and races leaves a good feeling within me when they take notice in what I create. It makes me proud of myself for what I can accomplish.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Starting my art business ‘ArtbyZariyah.’ Visual arts was an outlet for me to stay busy during the quarantine. As long as I am making meaningful art to me that’s all that matters. I have learned that I can’t worry about what others are or aren’t doing. It’s definitely been a journey so far. However, I also learned how to arrange time; balancing school and my work outside of school. I am grateful that I am able to fund my other artistic interests with talents. A piece of the funds that I earned from my art sale went towards a new laptop and camera for my editing business; to then help with my filmmaking career. I love that I can make a living doing what I love most.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I could show them the best time ever it would be to (in no particular order): 1. Get ice cream
2. Go on a hike or go the park
3. Play uno with a group of friends
4. Watch a comedy or rom-com.
5. Get world party pizza
6. Just talk and talk and talk.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Fortunately, the people around me have always supported everything I do. As well as how much they are a part of my growth. I thank my family, my close friends, my teachers, and God. This response is cliche, but I wouldn’t be the person that I am today without the love, guidance, and encouragement that I receive.
