We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasmine King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yasmine, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The reason why I chose to pursue a artistic/creative career is because it was something that came natural to me. Art is something that I enjoy, and as a result, something that I could also profit from while having fun. I never would have thought I would turn my work into a business. I still have a lot to learn but I have also learned a lot along my journey and I’m so excited to see where God takes me and my talents next. I am a firm believer that anything is possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in 3D custom paintings. My art is not only a reflection of the individual that’s being painted, but also a reflection of me. I believe that everyone has something unique about them that sets them apart, which is what my art emphasizes. I take a variety of different fabrics, paints, accessories, yarns etc. to create a “pop out” and tangible effect to each portrait. My signature style of my art is that it does not include facial features such as the eyes, and in some cases, the nose or the mouth. This is because my art focuses more on the silhouette and hair textures of an individual when I am creating. I believe true art should always have a little mystery to keep the viewers eye and mind intrigued. One of the biggest struggles that I had in this journey was self criticism. I am an extreme perfectionist when it comes to my art. As my favorite singer/songwriter Erykah Badu once said, “Keep in mind that I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my s—“. Thankfully I have supporting family and friends who always give me honest feedback on my work. Seeing the reactions from my customers when they received a painting, was the extra push I needed that helped me overcome my self-criticism , and continue to excel with my business.
I get my inspiration from a number of things, such as fashion, cartoons, hair textures, and even life experiences. What I love about art is there are no rules. My art allows me to express myself in a way that allows it to speak for me. My 3D art is very versatile. I am so fascinated by the different styles and textures of hair. Everyone express themselves in some way through their hair. It’s the little things that makes a person different from the next. I’ve always gravitated towards the people, places, and things in life that seems to be bold or “abnormal” from today’s standards. If you know me personally, you would know that everything I do has always been out of the box and unpredictable at times. What I want my customers to gain from my art is that you can be your unique self without being confined to what today’s beauty standards are. Times have definitely changed and I feel that the depression rates are rising daily. One of the main causes that lead to depression is comparison. I want people to know that being yourself is what makes you stand out. Do not let the pressures of the world tell you how to be yourself. You were divinely made to be yourself and nothing more. Know your worth and love who you are. Fashion is another way that is used as an outlet of expression. I have such a love for fashion, that one day, while brainstorming on how I could incorporate fashion into my art something clicked, and an idea came to mind.. I began playing around with some fabrics and paint until I figured out a way for the two to compliment each other. I didn’t know during that time I was in the process of starting a business destined for me. That was the beginning of my art business known as Pretty Kreations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would definitely take them downtown to experience Deep Ellum . Deep Ellum is very well known in the Dallas area. You can have a drink, eat, and enjoy a good time at any club that fits your music preference. The area is also known for its vibrant street art murals. It is definitely a vibe!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my close friends and family for the support throughout my journey. I would also like to give a shout out to my hometown, Eldorado, Arkansas. Growing up in my hometown, I was able to get inspiration from my experiences and the different personalities from the people I would encounter. I get a great portion of my inspiration from anything or anyone who stands out. I also would like to thank the El Dorado school district. In my school days, I attended art classes which exposed me to different types of art, textures, and techniques. I want to thank each art instructor that contributed to my creativity throughout those years.
