We had the good fortune of connecting with Worth Anne Herrell & Jordan Morrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Worth Anne & Jordan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As moms, we were searching for alternatives to the harsh chemicals that only offer mildly-effective treatments for children who are not feeling well. We were excited to discover Essential Oils, but quickly became overwhelmed trying to determine how to blend or dilute them properly. We realized that if it was confusing to us, with our backgrounds in Product Development and Marketing, then it must be even more confusing for most moms out there. We wanted to make Mom’s life a little easier with natural Essential Oil products for her little ones that are ready to use so Mom can feel good while helping her little one feel better.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Jordan and I have worked with each other at two other companies before starting our own. I (Worth Anne) literally introduced her to her husband over 15 years ago! We have been co-workers and best friends for over 15 years before we owned a business together. I think what sets us apart from other start ups is how our business came to be. Our idea for Oilogic came out of a personal need and experience we had as mothers and consumers, but we also had over 15 years of CPG industry experience in building brands. Therefore the combination of our personal passion and past experience gave us the confidence to trek down the road of entrepreneurship. Was it hard? Um yes. I think like most entrepreneurs, we underestimated many things in the beginning. Even though we had the experience of building brands, we did not have any experience owning our own business and have had to wear and learn many new hats, while continuing to run our households of elementary-aged kids. What are we most proud of? Although we are very proud of our distribution in retailers like Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS and more, I think what gives us the most joy is when we receive testimonials from customers who tell us their story about how our products has helped them. Our ultimate goal with our business is to make motherhood a little easier to navigate and we want our products to help do that. So when we hear from a customer who tells us how their baby slept all night long after using our Slumber & Sleep Roll-on, or when their kiddo gained some relief after soaking in our Stuffy Nose & Cough Vapor Bath, it gives us the warm fuzzies as it fulfills exactly what we are trying to do! Lessons? Entrepreneurship is a roller coaster ride!!!!! There are high highs, but can be low lows and the trick is to navigate both well. When there is a win, celebrate it, but don’t allow yourself to become complacent. When there is a low, understand it, make adjustments and keep going. Be resourceful and keep moving.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Well, we are Texans! So we would have to say: 1) The Texas State Fair – corny dogs, games, rides, animals, cars. It is a great time every year and we are so sad it won’t be happening this year (although we completely understand why!) 2) A Football Game – College (Go Horns! although Jordan would say Gig’ ’em Ags), high school or even THE Dallas Cowboys! There is nothing like the passion and community that Texas Football brings in the Fall. 3) Tex-Mex Food – one of our favorites is Mi Cocina (a regular for us for lunches and dinners!) Pair some quesadillas or nachos with a Mambo Taxi margarita for a perfect meal! (unless its lunch time and then no margarita, haha!) 4) Our churches – we both use our faith in God to guide our decisions for our lives and our family. Our church homes are where we feed our spirits weekly to keep in perspective our blessings and our role here on Earth.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our spouses and families who have been our cheerleaders and have faith in us even when we begin to question faith in ourselves. Their mentorship, love and selflessness have given us the opportunity to pursue our dream of entrepreneurship and we literally wouldn’t be here without them. Plus, we have to shoutout to our extended work family. Jordan and I are the face of the business, but our 3rd business partner, Jeff Morgan, along with our accountant, graphic designer and other extended team often does much of the heavy lifting. We could not do this by ourselves and we are very aware and grateful to those who are working alongside us everyday to build our brand and our mission.
