We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Kilpatrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Whitney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business out of pure necessity. I did not want to become a salon, because every single one I knew was miserable. I was making more than my parents combined at the age of 21. I was driving my dream car, purchased my first home, all while putting my husband through college. As a hairstylist working for someone else. Unfortunately there was two major problems in that salon. There was a lack of leadership and culture and then there weren’t many long term career opportunities. I stayed for four years, but it got to a point where I was dreading coming to work. After interview with several other commission style salons I realized that I had envisioned didn’t exist in my area so I was going to have to make it myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets my business apart from everyone else is that we value excellence and integrity above all else. I think when you embrace core values and a common mission as a team you become unstoppable. How we got here? It was not easy.. I had so many “learning opportunities’ which is code for failures along the way. I’ve read enough self help books to know that each of these “failures” were necessary in teaching me the things I needed to know before I could level up. I think the thing biggest thing I’ve learned along the way is that no one really knows what they’re doing but we are all just out here doing our best to figure it out and the only difference between the ones who fail versus the ones who succeed is that they got back up after they were knocked down time and time again. I want the world to know that I am here to make a positive impact on the beauty industry. I think we are in the midst of a revolution and it demands a shift in mindset and practice. It’s not just about adapting to change; it’s about driving it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh we would be hitting Magnolia Ave. Some of my favorite spots to eat are Wabi, Maggies R&R, Lockwood, Cane Rosso & Cheba. I would have to take my bestie to soul sweat for some yoga and then to Avoca or Cherry for a coffee! Then for brunch I’d have a hard time picking between Brewed and Paris! Then because she’s my bestie I have to treat her to a bouncy blowout at Maven Fort Worth Hair Co.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
