We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendi Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendi, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for my business during a routine self care moment. I, personally have been using sugar scrubs for years and many I’ve found to either be too abrasive, or they don’t exfoliate enough. Through my expertise in the science field, I’ve come to understand not only the need for skin exfoliation, but the chemical composition behind it. With all of the brands out there, I decided to take what I did and didn’t like, and create my own blend.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My business goes by Amaryllis Bliss, and under that umbrella is “Sweet As Sugar”- a growing line of handmade exfoliating body sugar scrubs. Some people have never used a sugar scrub and wonder if it’s something that only women can use, and the answer is no. Put blatantly, if you have skin, then you can and should use a sugar scrub. The scrub is used to gently exfoliate and lift the outermost layer of skin, leaving behind gentle, smooth, and moisturized skin. We have a little bit for everyone. With over 50 fragrances ranging from lemon to aloe, both women and men are sure to find something appealing to their senses and good on the skin. We even offer customized scrubs where fragrances can be combined and designed to achieve the perfect bliss or make the perfect gift for an event or special occasion. Our best seller includes a “Sweet As Sugar” box where consumers can get four scrubs in one box for a great price. Talk about variety and options! I got here by finding new ways to be innovative and constantly burying my head in research to be more marketable. I took the time to buy sugar scrubs from over 15 different companies and brands to get a feel for the product before designing my own. In the beginning, I faced obstacles making the perfect blend, but over time it became more apparent what was going to work and what I could improve on. My friends were great testers and gave me great feedback on those initial batches before the final product was unveiled. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along this journey is to never be afraid to tap into your market for support. I took time daily to reach out to friends, family, and associates to politely ask them for their support. This took me a long way. What I want the world to know about my brand is that this is only the beginning. Many have fallen head over heels for the sugar scrubs, however the entire business will extend to shea butters, bath salts, candles, and bath bombs. New products are currently in production!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a best friend that came to Atlanta I would take them to all of the city’s treasures. Atlanta has so much to offer from food to entertainment, we would have a full schedule! To start the day we would have brunch at Nouveau, a new gem that I recently dined at in College Park. They have amazing seafood shrimp and grits! I paired mine with one of their signature beverages that comes in a large pineapple. The entire experience was amazing. We would leave there and maybe visit Five Points, an urban area full of shops and boutiques. Leaving there we would swing by the Georgia Aquarium which is one of the biggest and nicest aquariums in the U.S. After all that walking, we might want to unwind a little bit and Jeju is the perfect escape for relaxation, saunas, massages, and girl talk. Dinner might be at Morton’s, an upscale steakhouse downtown. They by far have had one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. During the rest of the week we would be sure to hit the Mall of Georgia, Cirque, Six Flags, Stone Mountain, the Botannical Gardens, Cuts, Chops Lobster Bar and Piedmont Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my success to anyone who has ever supported and continues to support me in my endeavors. Whether its in the form of a donation, a purchase, a social media share, or simply kind words of encouragement-nothing goes unnoticed. I also have a special shout-out for my graphic designer Jenee Williams who patiently designed all of my marketing, flyers, and website. Her professionalism and creativity not only brought my vision to life, but has completely simplified my business.
