We had the good fortune of connecting with Valese Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valese, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for The Queendom was birthed from pure frustration. My business partner and I, realized we spent a full work shift getting all our beauty needs tended to and that the process needed to be more convenient, thus the The Queendom Beauty Bus was born. Due to COVID19 our full service mobile beauty salon and spa, lost our investor but, instead of accepting this as defeat we came up with the Queendom Beauty Box. This Beauty Box solely features brands by companies that have at least one Black or minority female founder and for every box purchased, a sexual assault survivor receives our “Crowned Case”, for free. We did a soft launch in November 2020 with a goal to sell 100 boxes and achieved beyond that. Starting January 2021, The Beauty Box will offer a subscription option at $100 a year, to receive a new box with new products quarterly. If a consumer chooses to purchase the box up front, the cost will be $35.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In addition to co-owning The Queendom, I am a freelance Publicist. I ended up a full time entrepreneur because I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, even in childhood. This journey has not been easy at all, especially during this global pandemic. It caused both of my businesses to come to a screeching halt but, luckily I had enough savings and a great support system that has kept me afloat during this difficult time. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to be married to the vision but not the method that gets you there. What I want the world to know about both of my brands, The Queendom and Sincerely Nicole, is that they are all about service. My goal has always been to help as many people as I possibly can, in anyway that I can. When I leave this earth I want people to say that I was truly a giver and gave back more than I was given.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live with my best friend and Dallas is so huge that this is a tough question to answer. We’d definitely visit downtown Dallas, go to the aquarium, Reunion Tower, Victory Park, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, restaurants in Oak Cliff. It’s just so much I don’t even know where to start. One of my favorite places to go is the Freeman in Deep Ellum, they have great food and entertainment. If you come to visit you have to go there, Sweet Georgia Brown’s, Jonathan’s, Aunt Irene’s, Rudy’s and The Rustic for Brunch. My favorite bbq in the city is in this small shack on the side of the road in Garland, called Meshacks. You have to get there super early to get food because he sells out quick. I love history and cultural things so the African American Museum, Perot Museum and The Stockyards in Fort Worth are some of my favorite attractions. The great thing about Dallas is it has something for everybody to enjoy, just depends on your style and personality what will be interesting and exciting for you.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who deserve credit for the women Bridgette and I today, that I just can’t name them all. So I will give a shoutout to village that raised us and continues to support us. Everybody from our parents, siblings, extended family, teachers, coaches, friends, bosses, coworkers and in between have given so much to us, which is why we owe it others to give everything that was given to us back.
