We had the good fortune of connecting with Unorthodox Fashions and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Unorthodox Fashions, what do you attribute your success to?
Networking and empowerment are the most important factors to the success of our brand as we believe they go hand in hand. While our brand’s purpose is to inspire people, the underlying basis of achieving that goal is through networking. We want this to be more than a platform for clothes. We envision it as a gateway between underserved areas and being that change for younger generations to come.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
UF is set apart because we are not only leaders but also are apart of the communities that we lead. We use our platform to connect with local brands/orgs as we have a vision for “everybody to eat”. We got to where we are today by leaning on those who supported us rather it was a donation, creative idea, or simply having encouraging words. The journey has not been easy as we faced many marketing set backs, but we often overcame by discussing matters privately and seeing the most beneficial outcome. We’ve learned that trial and error is apart of the process and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. I love our drive, we don’t have a huge privately owned store-front or industry. Our orders/brainstorming, marketing, production is primarily done by my daughter and I in our front living room. We have each other, our passion, creativity, and desire to change the game. We want the world to know that UF is on the rise and taking 2022 by storm!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Starting the week off, I would definitely bring my friends to our church Koinonia Christian Church. Pastor Ronnie Goines is amazing and I’m sure my friends would enjoy him. Throughout the week could be chilled activities like brunch, poetry club, and museums. Definitely on my radar to eat at is XOXO dining in the cute atmosphere and to have the Ziziki’s brunch and mimosa buffet. As far as activities, I wouldn’t mind taking them to the black girl magic museum and other cool tourist attractions down town as the night life is pretty amazing. The last day of the trip would be a rest day to regroup from being so on the go the whole week

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
YES! We want to give a major shoutout to my mom, (& Kaziah’s grandmother) who is a seamstress and lead us to being drawn to fashion by seeing the power of networking through her job. Also thank you to my supportive friends Chastity Kennedy and Shay Jenkins. They both are owners of their own brands with a makeup artistry and a non-profit for young African-American females so we are so honored that they take time out of their busy schedules to show love to us in whatever capacity and they know we’d do the same for them.
