Meet Travis Burkybile | Owner – The Flexin Texan – Golf fitness

We had the good fortune of connecting with Travis Burkybile and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Travis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had worked from an early age in several small businesses. Post college I worked in my first large company environment and it didn’t take long to know I didn’t care for it at all. When I first moved to Dallas in 2014 with my wife I had an opportunity to start from scratch and decided I wanted to be in control of my time and decisions in my career path.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started off my early career working in a large corporate gym as a personal trainer in Chicago. It was one of the busiest gyms in the country at the time. It was a huge learning curve for me as a small town kid trying to develop the ability to connect and work in such a fast paced and busy environment.
I got the opportunity to connect with some like minded coaches in the early stages of a startup that became a small boutique gym. That ignited my development as I was connected to some cutting edge education and mentorship that shifted how I thought about health and wellness.
There were a lot of challenges; lean paychecks and learning that being a good practitioner was not the same as being a good business person and business owner. You can’t just lean in to your strengths, but also develop your weak areas and get help from those who are great at things you are not.
I want people to know that I truly care about helping people reclaim their health and wellness not only in golf fitness, but in the rest of their life as well. Avoiding falls, playing on the ground with their grandkids, and the stuff in life that is really important. That is what keeps me doing what I do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You have to start with food right? I don’t think you can go wrong with Pecan Lodge or Terry Blacks BBQ in Deep Ellum. Those two have some of the best brisket that is always great.
As a dad raising a young son the last couple of years I am not the person who knows the hottest nightlife. I would say keep it family friendly- the state fair is coming up and that is an experience you have to do at least once. A rodeo at Dickies Arena or the Mesquite rodeo is another one of those quintessential Texas events everyone seems to have a lot of fun at.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been blessed to have many great influences and mentors over the years. Chris and Ann Frederick of Stretch to Win Institute especially have changed how I work with my clients.
In my career I have gotten the chance to meet people from all kinds of backgrounds, jobs, and age ranges. The biggest thing I have learned is you can take lessons from all kinds of people, even if it doesn’t seem like there is a ton of commonality. Learning people skills transcends any industry.
Of course my wife! She has always supported me through the good times and the tough times as well.
