We had the good fortune of connecting with Tracy Bennett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tracy, how do you think about risk?
I wholeheartedly believe taking risks is where you grow. As a graphic designer turned home design/DIY enthusiast, my biggest risk was jumping into a new niche that I have no formal training in. Although graphic design and home design have many crossovers and overlapping parts, they are very different too. I asked myself, will my vision be more rewarding than the risk itself? My idea may soar with success and these little worries will seem like a grain of salt to me someday, or it may fail. There’s a lesson to be learned in all of risk-taking, and failure can provide an opportunity to learn from mistakes. I knew I loved designing rooms and spaces as much or more than graphic design so I decided to take the risk of starting my own blog and Instagram account. Soon I discovered that many people were asking my advice on their homes, which solidified my decision.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My home design and content creation business is still in its very early stages. I decided to start sharing our home and the design and DIY processes that came along with it on social media in 2021 to inspire and encourage others that might feel stuck or incapable that anyone can make their house a home. I really became serious about turning it into a business in 2022. If you know anything about content creation as a business (in any niche), it is not as easy as people think! The most challenging part is showing your authentic self without creating an entire reality show of your life. I want my audience to know I share my knowledge, passion and love for home to inspire others to do the same and feel confident in creating spaces you love that show how your home is unique to you and your family, not to follow trends or try to create a magazine-worthy home. I have learned that telling your story is an integral part of relating to others. My brand is authenticity and uniqueness to showcase all the things in a home that make it uniquely YOU. Working with brands and other companies to share with my audience is a challenge because I always share only things I buy, know and love so I share those with my audience. Home takes time just like building a brand and business takes time, and that has been my biggest challenge. I want to reach and inspire only those who truly believe in the same philosophies.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting I would take them to my favorite local restaurant, The Ranch at Las Colinas for its farm-to-table food that is also truly Texas. Texas is hot –extremely hot–about 6 months out of the year so outdoor activities can be limited. But the Dallas Arboretum is a wonderful place to visit in the spring and fall for all the flowers, pumpkins and seasonal outdoors. We live really close to the Toyota Music Factory and you cannot go wrong with almost any of the restaurants there. I am not really a music concert gal, so I might not be a great person to ask in terms of entertainment. My idea of entertainment is going out to eat and hanging with friends. A good walk around the canal in Las Colinas and maybe a little nighttime gondola ride would definitely fit the bill.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I could not be doing what I am most passionate about and love without the support of my husband. He is always willing to jump in to a project when I need help or help me problem solve.
