We had the good fortune of connecting with Torrie “el Capeteaux” Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Torrie “El CapeTeaux”, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The arts has really been all I know, starting from when I was a kid being introduced to vinyl albums like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. I was about three and I knew almost every step to Billie Jean, that was when my love for Michael Jackson started and studying and also being inspired by him and his brothers of the Jackson 5. I wanted to dance and even learned how to cheer, but music took over my life. Joined the band in the 5th grade playing Clarinet at Roger Q. Mills then middle school at O. W. Holmes joined the band learning about the baritone saxophone and the bass clarinet some interesting instruments in my opinion. Becoming drum major my 8th grade year was really what made me know I could really become something, around that time CDs were growing popular and now I was really intrigued on how people were even on those things back then. That’s when I discovered New Edition and so many other R&B artists, Hip Hop was really taking over in addition I loved listening to Britney Spears as well. Franklin Roosevelt High School was when my creativity really took off, being in the marching band and performing for battle of the bands in front of large crowds allowing me to dance and play the saxophone and do what I loved that was the best of times. With all this inspiration surrounding me and loving how music made me feel, I wanted to tap into more of it myself and see myself on the other side. The music industry seemed so mysterious like it was really hard to break through, I was always told I would be a star one day I just didn’t know when and how.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my music, I love taking pictures but my music is what makes me a true artist. The road from November 2019 when I recorded my first song “Feelings (Got Me), to now in August 2024 after releasing my 5th album “Forever CapeTeaux” hasn’t been easy but it has been worth it in a lot of ways. With this career, you do have to sacrifice so much only because the dream is so big. I’ve lost, I’ve gained, I’ve lost and lost again. What keeps me going is going on YouTube watching my music videos listening to my albums on Apple Music that brings me so much joy because I know I’m doing what my heart wants and pursuing my passion. I’m most excited about where my art and music has took me, seems like my song “The Booty Rock Song” came to life with me visiting Los Angeles during the BET Awards weekend and going to the Grand Canyon all things in the song I put thinking it would come true and it did. Want the world to know that I am me a gay black and proud recording artist and actor who wants to conquer the world! I promote love and peace!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We going either to Rudy’s Chicken or Kooley’s Barbecue first to get some food as soon as bestie touch down! Then ride around the city maybe go to Cedar Springs the gayborhood take them to Marty’s Live not too far away just to get a taste of the club life vibe. Since I love to take pictures we going to a lot of dope art attractions like, the Fabrication Yard and around downtown then to some of the different lakes around like Joe Pool or White Rock Lake. I love food so we have to visit a lot of my favorite restaurants like Southside Steaks and Cakes, Slutty Vegan, Serious Pizza a lot of “S”s but trust me they all good. Seems like Deep Elm really has a good vibe we would definitely go there a few more times. We would drive to Arlington going to Six Flags over Texas and go to The Parks Mall. Can’t be a trip without going to the movies at Studio Movie Grill I love their mudslides. Then any museums they would want to go too and end it with Grapevine Mills Mall in Grapevine.
