We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonia Ajamu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tonia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success and brand is compassion. Often times, I have worked with or worked for professionals in this industry who either don’t have or don’t tap into their sympathy for the suffering of the patient. Conversely, I chose this career path because of the feeling that I had from the nurses who treated my mother during her battle with breast cancer. They treated her with extreme care and included her mental and social wellbeing. This experience has lead to the foundation of how I practice. I find mental health to be intriguing, learning how the brain works is fascinating, there is fulfillment and reward in finding breakthrough innovative ways to help people take care of their mental health. I find that utilizing an integrative care model along with encouraging the patient to participate in their treatment goals, enhances their mental, physical, and social wellness. The way the nurses treated my mother and my family governs the way that I treat all of my patients and their families.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Breakthrough Mental Healthcare LLC is an outpatient mental healthcare facility located in Frisco and Dallas Texas. At Breakthrough Mental Healthcare LLC, you can be assured you will receive the highest quality service from a dedicated and patient focused provider who utilizes traditional as well as innovative treatments to help individuals take care of their mental health and live an optimal life.
I am most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone and transitioning the idea of having my own practice into a reality. I recently launched my practice in February of this year and it wasn’t easy and there were challenges to overcome. Credentialing and contracting with insurance companies is a critical component of my practice. Unfortunately, I contracted with a vendor to do this credentialing and contracting who was not transparent and honest which impacted my business. I learned the hard way that you have to identify these issues and correct these business relationships in a quick manner to avoid irreversible damage. Although, I encountered this bump in the road, business is progressing nicely and I am happy that I embarked on this endeavor.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being that this is the shopping and dining capital of the country, if my best friend were to visit I would shop at the Shops at Legacy and dine at the restaurants on Legacy West in Plano and the Star in Frisco. For entertainment, I would suggest a comedy show at the Improv in Addison or Arlington, a Maverick’s basketball game, or a Dallas Cowboys Football game. This is Dallas this is no shortage of things to do or people to see.

None of my success would have been possible without GOD, who guides and sustains me, and the support and sacrifices of my husband, children, and family.
