We had the good fortune of connecting with Todd Crane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Todd, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind our success is honest representation of what we are, where we are, and who we are. We’re not going to pretend we’re something that we’re not.
We use social media and word of mouth in a positive way to feature our baked products (always acknowledging inspiration/recipe sources) and honestly striving to improve our products one step at a time.
We are a cottage bakery and intend to remain a cottage bakery. We prefer this format to our business and when people want us to grow into something larger, we explain that the success we’ve enjoyed as a cottage bakery is fulfilling and adequately challenging. We love being part of the “East Dallas” culture and love our customers (many have become good friends).
What should our readers know about your business?
I tell people that I bake like my mom and grandmother taught me. I enjoy learning new things but my goal isn’t to become a fancy gourmet bake shop. My family back three generations has been involved with the retail business (grocery) and we all know that the customer is the boss. If I can’t deliver what a customer wants/needs, I am open and forthright about the limitations (but I’m always striving to take the extra step).
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We rarely go out and aren’t entertainers. I take family and friends to our favorite places—The Dallas Arboretum, White Rock Lake, our local favorite Tex Mex (El Vecino) and Keller’s Burgers on NW Highway.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Good Local Markets here in Dallas gave us a pre-pandemic opportunity to sell our goods at the Lakewood Farmer’s Market and from this experience, our customer base expanded (via direct sales or word of mouth).
