We had the good fortune of connecting with Toast and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toast, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always had an imagination. As a kid I would dream that one day I would own an island where, instead of roads, you would use roller coasters to get around and… I wanted to grow up to be a famous country singer and guitarist. That dream turned in owning a brewery, taproom, and art studio… And I still plan on being a little famous, at least as a brewer and artist. I love creating. It makes me happy.
My passion for brewing started as a weekend hobby. I was already deep into the craft beer world. All the different styles of beer and creative beer names fascinated me. Breweries consistently pushing the boundaries and coming up with new innovations. There is so much spirit behind their names and the beer labels and everything that goes into making a craft beer. Each is unique in it’s own way, much like a painting, or any work of art.
So after spending a couple years working as an assistant brewer at a 30bbl production brewery I asked my wife, who also loves craft beer, if we could do it. She said, “if other people can do it why can’t we?”. So we made it happen together. We started our brewery… Toasty Bros.
What should our readers know about your business?
Brewing for Denton, TX. Toasty Bros. is a brand representing local pride and creativity, with a passion for brewing craft beer. Working together with the local community to make something awesome! With fresh ingredients and an ever growing understanding of the process, our goal is to brew, one small batch at a time, high quality beer for this little city in North Texas.
Was it easy? Not exactly. We just took it one step at a time. If someone tells you no, ask why, ask how do I make this happen then do whatever it takes to move on to the next step.
I want people to see Toasty Bros. Beer, Taproom, Art Studio & Bakery as a local Denton mom and pop stop. And I want the world to see me as the artist behind every beer we brew there.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Denton TX has so many cool local independent small businesses. I would start by grabbing a beer to go from The Bearded Monk. (In Denton it is legal to walk around with an open beer in hand). We would walk from Bearded Monk to the downtown square, grab a slice of pizza from J&J’s, and head over to Howling Mutt to hang out, enjoy some music and relax in the beer garden. Then grab another “walkin’ beer” and head back to Beer Alley for some delicious beer and tacos at Denton County Brewing Company. Grab a six pack to go and walk over to Iron Wood Axe throwing. Next door to Iron Wood Axe throwing is this really groovy little bar called Vinyl Lounge where they spin records and serve up some really chill vibes. From there you can walk over to Harvest House for some Java Rocket Coffee and live music. It’s one of my favorite places to catch a show with lots of outdoor seating and the staff there is nothing short of amazing. For a day of bar hopping I’d start at Armadillo Ale works for some coffee and or beer. Be sure to grab some food at Boca 31 right next door. Then head back towards the square, swing into Oak Street Draft House. If your not full from Boca 31 you got Komodo Loco right next door to OSDH. Then walk up the street to either Miss Angeline’s for a fancy cocktail or glass of wine, or East Side for a vast selection of craft beers and whiskeys. Work up an appetite and hit the downtown square. Maybe pick up a new record or book from recycled books, get a haircut at The Bearded Lady, and stop into The Loophole for some fried avocado and great prices on local craft beer. You also got Pascall’s and Any’s Bar on the square to check out. Finish the night off at Dan’s Silverleaf for live music and good company.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ms. Toast, my wife. Without her I’d be lost. Not only does she cheer on and encourage me to chase my dreams, she makes my dreams her own. She likes to hide behind the scenes so I can have the spot light. My success if very much thanks to her believing in me, in us, our brand, and our future. Thank you Cinna. I love you.
