We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim and Amy Sherman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim and Amy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Even before we were married thirty years ago, we had been making candy, and cakes to share with family and friends because the joy we see in their faces when they enjoy our creations brings us tremendous happiness. Over the years the recipients of our treats have encouraged us to open a business to sell them assuring us that we would be successful; however, change is scary, and we were intimidated by the prospect for many years. Then, back in 2021, fate put us in touch with the owner of a Texas honey farm who was looking for a chocolatier to create a chocolate concoction that they would market as “Armadillo Turds.” After some trials, we developed an “Armadillo Turd” that had just the right balance of chocolate, honey, peanut butter and technique to provide the desired consistency, and Razskaboochy Treats was born.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are living the sweet life. Our small candy company has been in business for about one year; we officially debuted our website in the fall of 2022. Amy and I have a wonderful line of artisan hand crafted treats which includes truffles, caramels, barks, brittles, and a delectable chocolate bourbon pound cake. We are proud of our wonderful products, and our excitement comes from those who have enjoyed our wares and crave more. With more than thirty years of experience creating, tweaking and lovingly producing our recipes, we know what it takes to consistently deliver quality confections. We produce everything ourselves, which ensures that we maintain high standards. Business – wise we are still in the process of learning. Making the right connections with customers and potential venders is a learning process which includes some trial and error. Keeping an open mind, learning from our mistakes and employing a positive attitude towards our future will be key to our success. Our brand is Razskaboochy Treats, and we want the world to know that life is better with A Big Bag of Brittle.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have a large family and many friends who don’t live in the area, so we show off our city a few times each year. If the right artist is playing, the Granada would be a must. If we entertained during the fall – a day at The Great State Fair of Texas would be part of the agenda. First time to Texas? We’re taking you the Stockyards and Billy Bob’s or to downtown Pioneer and Dealey Plazas. For a great meal on a special occasion, we would make our way to St Martin’s. If we have returning visitors, we would invite them to come with us to the McKinney Farmer’s Market, and while we were vending our wares, we would send them off on a shopping spree to gather farm-fresh ingredients for an evening meal we would prepare. A stroll through downtown McKinney with a meal at the Guava Tree Cantina, Urban Grill, Rick’s Chophouse, or The Yard, if our guests need a puppy friendly restaurant, is quite fun. A beautiful spring day is sublime while enjoying a picnic at the Arboretum. With time to plan, we would reach out to Aaron Tate Glassworks to create our own souvenirs. And if our guests enjoy games of chance, we would head to Lone Star Park to watch the ponies run and listen to live music between races. The DFW area is full of wonderful activities, and we look forward to reading what others have suggested in ShoutOut DFW, so we can go on some new adventures.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The number of people to thank for who and where we are in life is enormous. We have been blessed with great parents and loving families who suggested, advised, encouraged, supported and nudged us right along. We’ve had friends doing the same and ultimately a stranger, at the time, pushed us over the edge into business. The ladies of PEO gave our website opening a round of approval, The Seed Foundation invited us to participate in their Farm Tour, Profound Kitchen provides us a place to hone our craft, and Vicki Deerman linked us to ShoutOut DFW. We are grateful for all the many others who have supported us at markets, forwarded our social media posts and lifted us up with love.
