We had the good fortune of connecting with Teshe Melcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teshe, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Several habits have been the reason behind my success as a barber and business owner. First, maintaining a strong work ethic. I believe in consistently putting in the effort to deliver the best service to my clients and ensuring that every haircut reflects my dedication to my craft. Second, effective time management has been key. Balancing the demands of running a business while also improving my skills takes careful planning and prioritization. Finally, having a growth mindset has been really important. Embracing challenges as opportunities for learning and improvement has allowed me to consistently evolve and thrive in this industry.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My name is Teshe Melcher, owner and creator of She’s My Barber. I am currently located and working in Hutto, Texas. I have been honing my barbering skills since 2015, and every step of this journey has been a source of joy for me. Growing up, I was surrounded by family members who were cosmetologists, including my grandmother, aunts, cousins, and my mom. Although my mom was a stay-at-home mom and didn’t work professionally, she would cut my brother’s hair in the kitchen. I was always captivated by the process, watching and learning from her as she shared her knowledge and passion for her craft. Even at a young age, I knew that this was the field I wanted to pursue.
During my senior year of high school, I made the decision to attend cosmetology school. Soon after graduating, I obtained my license, and from that moment on, I felt a connection to the art of cutting hair. I got my first job at a shop, where I exclusively worked with men’s hair. It was during this time that I truly fell in love with the entire process. I developed a drive to learn, improve, and perfect my craft. Cutting men’s hair became my passion, and I never looked back.
With each client I serve, I strive to provide the highest level of attention to detail and precision. Creating a fun, comfortable, and professional environment for my clients is incredibly important to me. In addition to haircuts, I offer services such as beard trims, brow shaping, designs, and waxing. I consider myself truly blessed to have built long-lasting relationships with my clients, many of whom have become like friends and family throughout my career. Their loyalty and support mean the world to me. I am grateful for the journey that led me to where I am today, being able to pursue my passion as a barber and make a positive impact on my client’s lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What I love about Austin is the food, music and nature within the city. For food, breakfast tacos at Juan in a Million, BBQ at Terry Blacks and Stubb’s BBQ and then try all different kinds of foods at the food truck parks. See live music in the Red River district, shop on South Congress, then do some hiking through the Greenbelt and kayaking along Lady Bird Lake.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Chris Coachman, my coworker from my first job as a solo barber, was incredibly supportive and encouraging as I started my own business. He always took the time to share his knowledge and offer advice, which helped me so much in the early stages. His encouragement gave me the confidence to continue to take my business to the next level, which motivated me to work hard and stay focused in that process. Having someone like Chris by my side was so valuable, and I’m grateful for his mentorship during that crucial time.
