We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, what’s your definition for success?
I would define success as achieving a certain goal that you have in life. That can pertain to many different aspects whether it be career related, family, personal, religious beliefs, financial, business, etc. I would say that I have goals in each of those categories. For me, my successes fluctuate depending on what stage of life I’m in. For example, a few years ago my goal was to graduate and earn a degree. I accomplished that, and then I moved on to the next goal that I thought would bring me success. Success is a very fluid concept to me because it can change so often; how you define it and how you reach it. At this stage of my life, success to me is continuing my photography while maintaining relationships. Personally I’m a pretty career driven person and that gave me some blinders for a bit (wanting to only be successful career wise), but I began to realize that that was not 100% fulfilling to me. I learned that success comes in different ways to everyone and not everyone has the same ways of reaching that. What fulfills me is spending time with people who I get to build relationships with, whether it’s family, friends, clients, or clients who turn into friends! That’s one of the reasons why I’m thankful I chose photography as something I wanted to pursue. I get to work on my career while interacting with people and not miss out on life! So to bring it back to the original question, I defined success as reaching what you want to achieve in life, and for me, that’s building a career where I still get to have a blast and do what I love, and getting to share that with others as well! And the best part is- your successes don’t have to reach a halt, they can be changed, edited, erased, or added on to. I’m very grateful for that!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a photographer in the north suburbs of Dallas, TX specializing in fashion and lifestyle! You don’t really see a ton of fashion photographers in the suburbs, so I’m hoping to fill that void! It excites me to take a fun outfit with unique styling and photograph it in a minimal environment. It is definitely not an easy road as most everything I do is done by myself- finding a model, makeup artist, stylist, location, scheduling, etc. but after I found a good formula for me to follow, it became more organic! It usually starts with me getting an idea for a shoot and then putting all the pieces together to turn it into a full concept. I want people to know that you don’t necessarily need to be a professional fashion model to do a shoot with me. We can just have fun!!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever I have a friend in town, I like to take them to Grandscapes in The Colony! There is pretty much everything to do there like shopping, restaurants, mini golf, go-karting at Andretti’s and a bunch of other activities! Another place I like is the Boardwalk in the Plano/Frisco area. A perfect day in the life of me would be getting coffee in the AM, going thrift shopping (maybe stop at Target, because why not), and then getting in a cute outfit for dinner while taking cute pictures along the way! One place a love for the summer is The Yard in downtown Mckinney. It’s a really nice spot that has indoor and outdoor dining, and you can bring your dog! Literally perfection.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The first person who came to mind as far as credit would be God! I’ve learned so much about myself through the gifts he has given me in leadership, communication and creativity. I’m very involved in my church and I’ve gotten to grow so much as a person because of Him.
I’d also like to shoutout my parents for being so supportive in whatever I’ve wanted to do. I can truly say that they have never pressured or pushed their goals onto my siblings and me. Whatever we want to do, they’ve always given us full creative freedom which I know not everyone has, so thank you mom and dad!
I’d also like to shoutout where I was able to study photography – Columbia College Chicago. I thought going to school for photography and business would be smooth sailing, I was definitely wrong! It was a challenge for sure, but it was a challenge that I needed in order to strengthen my skills, and I’m super thankful that I stuck it out as I got to meet some amazing people and grow my network. Class of 2019 woohoo!!!!!
