We had the good fortune of connecting with Tayler “Jax” Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tayler “Jax”, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Working in the ER during Covid allowed some initial free time to pursue art. I read more drew more consumed more media than I had in a long time. That really sparked a drive to get back into what I wanted to do, realizing slowly that while I was a good medical professional, art has always been my calling and what I believe to be my niche in society.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve found myself drifting towards different styles than I initially imagined myself doing my entire career. I started with a drive to do Neo-Traditional and American Traditional, where lately I’ve found myself doing a lot of Anime and Blackwork tattoos. I really love doing tattoos that I have a knowledge of, or something that I can really collaborate with my clients on.

This almost 4 year long career of mine hasn’t been the easiest, but one of my favorite quotes has been “Nothing in life worth having, comes easy”. I carry that mantra with me everyday.

The lessons come daily whether that be how to deal with difficult clients and miscommunication, or how to make sure that the income from this job stays sustainable and allows me to continually put food on the table for my family. One thing I tell anyone wanting to get into the tattoo industry would be get in anywhere you can, doors open up constantly. You have to jump in to swim and if you want something bad enough you’ll make the time for it.

The only thing I want this world to know about me is that I will do this job till I die, I want to make art till I pass on to the next place. My shop and myself keep growing and learning because we keep adapting to this ever changing environment.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite thing to take a friend to has to be the Square in Denton, plenty of great food and shops to get clothes, pop culture items (vintage and new) and then head to places all around Denton that fall in those categories as well. Great eats are always Cartwright’s and Dix Coney Island, great drinks you can find just down the block at Eastside bar and Miss Angelines next door.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate everything to my family and friends who constantly support myself and my career. I continue to do what I love because I have the love on my side from my circle. I’d like to dedicate this to my Grandma, Janice. Who at the time of writing this is on hospice after a four and a half year long battle with cancer.
