We had the good fortune of connecting with Taryn Natzic and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taryn, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Trying to balance work and life has been at the core of each decision I have made over the last 2 years, including the decision to open my own business. After 13 years in the corporate world, I knew I didn’t have the balance in life that I wanted. I wanted less time in the office, behind a monitor and more time to enjoy fitness and family. Starting my business has allowed me to dictate my work hours and freed my time and energy for the things I am passionate about. I spend my time bonding with family, expanding my knowledge on nutrition, fitness, and mental health, and ultimately becoming a foster mom. I want to show clients that life can be fruitful and passionate. We have control over our lives and how we respond to opportunities and challenges.
What should our readers know about your business?
I opened Total Strength Coppell to provide women a coaching experience centered on total wellness, including mental and emotional strength, good nutrition, and meaningful movement.
My passion for wellness and coaching fellow women comes from my own struggles with mental illness. All my life I struggled with anxiety but in my role as a corporate employee, my anxiety was crippling, and I had frequent panic attacks over the lack of control in my life and career. At my deepest point, I was forced to take time off from work. I had no self-confidence, no passion and was ashamed of my appearance. I knew focusing on my physical and mental health needed to be a priority. And it has been for the last 4 years.
As I rebuilt my confidence, I realized so many women experience the same insecurities and struggles. I wanted to create a place where women could build confidence, take risks, and exercise without judgement; a place where they could put themselves first. In the fitness industry women are often underserved and even still the message is often only focused on body image. There is so much to be gained when we take the time to understand our passions and find our internal strength.
I have experienced what my clients struggle with daily. It can be difficult to put yourself first and having someone in your corner, cheering you forward can make all the difference.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being an outdoorsy girl, I’d plan time camping (let’s be real, with an RV!) on Lake Grapevine. We would be out on the water kayaking and paddle boarding, or hiking any of the local trails.
Camping out requires grilling but we would have to make a stop at one of my favorite eateries in Coppell, J Macklin’s Grill. They make some great brisket nachos and sitting out on the patio, enjoying brunch makes for the perfect start to a Sunday.
For some entertainment, I’d plan time to enjoy burgers and beers at Texas Live before heading over to the new Ranger’s ballpark, Globe Life Field. The games aren’t quite as sweltering, and I love the energy of being at a live game.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve had so many people in my corner over the last few years but my husband, Andy, has been my rock. At the beginning of this journey, I was in one of the darkest places in my life, and Andy kept me going. When I shared with him my desire to find a personal trainer to help me get healthy, he drove me around to find a club and trainers I would be comfortable with; and he even joined and worked out alongside me. As my passion grew for fitness, he encouraged me to pursue my certification as a trainer. He took care of the household during my study hours and quizzed me before my exam. When I told him I was ready to coach full time and leave corporate he said he was behind me, and we would figure out how to make it happen. We both knew that meant a shift in lifestyle and location, but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make with me. I’m very blessed to have found a partner who supports my dreams and actively helps me achieve them.
The second shoutout would be to my “home gym,” The Fitsmith. Without their introduction to fitness, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today. Max and his coaches (Cam and Mo) are welcoming, inclusive, and energetic. I fell in love with The Fitsmith. They have an ability to make workouts fun, even if they do give you an exercise you despise (pull-ups!). I found so much inner strength as a client at The Fitsmith and it is their spirit that I hope to bring to my clients.
