We had the good fortune of connecting with Talitha Imara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talitha Imara, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I think this will always remain a bit difficult and very personal. It’s like trying to find balance. The answer normally comes when I’m being honest with myself. Am I trying to give up because I’m overwhelmed/tired? Do I want to push through because I have trouble letting go? It’s complicated. In the end we just have to trust ourselves, make a decision and move forward, however that forward will look like. A silly example maybe, but a way of knowing when to keep going is when after doing the thing you didn’t feel like doing, you feel better, as if you’re on your way to becoming more of who you essentially are/want to be. Like going to the gym when I don’t feel like it, but afterwards I’m always happy that I did. Kind of like investing in myself, whether it’s my time, care or money.

In the specific sense, talking about creating, I’d say we’re always in the process of learning and getting better. So, just because things aren’t that good right now, we can always achieve better tomorrow. If we would give up, that means we would stop our growth, so it wouldn’t make sense to give up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I consider my art to be in everything that I do in my everyday life. From the way I get up, to the way that I move, the decisions I make, how I take care of myself and even the way that I speak to myself and others. It’s more then just making music to me. I find inspiration in it all. I enjoy drawing and painting, going for long strolls while listening to music and writing lyrics, being observant, dancing and cooking and a long etc. Lately I’ve been thinking of taking a pottery class. I did it some time when I was a child and recently it has been on my mind again, so I think I will revisit this form of creativity soon. I really believe my art to be an extension of myself. A way for me to express myself and present myself to the outside world.
What sets me apart from others is just being genuinely me. I don’t need to do anything especially crazy to be different. I’m already an individual and that’s enough. I’m just learning more about myself and being as honest as possible throughout that journey.
When it comes to my music I can honestly say it wasn’t easy and it still isn’t easy, but I’m proud that I decided to just move forward with what I have in this moment, instead of waiting on something or someone. It has also pushed me to study music production, so I can be more self sufficient.
I’m not where I would like to be yet, but I’m appreciative of where I am right now. I trust that with consistency, learning a bit everyday, the repetition/trial and error will bring me to where I’m supposed to be.
Time will pass anyway, so at least we should do something with it. These small steps, I’m sure, they’ll become big changes over time.
Something I think is important for any artist is to share your art. Don’t keep it or hide it. Bring it out into the world, you never know what can come of it, any new collaboration opportunities, etc.
I also believe that when you release it you release it from yourself and that creates new space for new creations,
Another thing I’ve learned is that it’s also important to know about the business side of music. If you have something good it can work and it can work organically, but there’s nothing wrong with marketing, promoting your song and sharing it over and over again. You might have new public that hasn’t seen it yet. Keep sharing.

What do I want the world to know about me, brand and story? I think it’s not so much about me personally, more about a feeling. Kind of like “wanting to leave a place kinder, more beautiful, because I’ve been there”. I want to write things that make people feel good, seen, heard, and/or motivated by. I guess, if I would have to be recognised I would like it to be as a vessel of this kind of expression, of genuine joy, love and positivity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely say Magnolia avenue. There are a lots of restaurants, shops, coffee shops, etc, and you can run into live music at different spots in that same street. (I also saw there’s a karaoke place on Saturdays).

Since I’m vegan I would recommend getting an ice cream at Melt Ice Creams, because they have vegan options.
There’s a restaurant called Spiral, which is completely vegan, that would be a good option to go for some food. They also have a bakery called Planted Bakery, for some yummy treats 🙂

For other spots outside Magnolia, I would recommend Maiden for a fine dining experience (of course, also vegan).

Another thing I would do is just grabbing a bike and ride around on the trinity trails. I always enjoy that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my family, and my dad in particular, for sharing this huge love for music with me. He’s been a singer all my life and I’ve had the blessing to be able to see him sing on stage since I can remember. I would also like to thank everyone for listening to my music! Thank you to the people that have collaborated with me in any form of creation (music, video, photography, etc.) and another thank you to the ones that will do so in the future 🙂
Thank you for having me on the series! I’m very grateful and excited for what’s to come!
