We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Johnson-Watkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I just wanted to do something that brought me joy and also made me money. My sister and nephew inspired me and I kind of just ran with it!Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own an online sunglass and handbag boutique called Tha Shade Queen. I sell sunglasses and handbags (obviously), but I also like to believe that I sell an experience and a vibe as well. I keep trends and current fashion in mind but I also like to stay ahead of trends so you’ll definitely find sunglasses or handbags on my website that you might not find elsewhere. And even if you do, they’re going to be so much more affordable on my site. I take very careful care with how I provide customer service and how you receive a package from Tha Shade Queen . I want to provide that small business feel and experience. I write custom thank you letters with every order and I’m sure to fulfill orders as soon as I can so that you get your order in just a few days. I have worked very hard but I’ve relied so much on my friends who have helped me with the photo shoots and marketing. I don’t think I’d be as far as I am without their support. I am still learning everyday how to improve my business and it has been constant trial and error but that’s also what I enjoy about being a business owner. I just want the world to know what it means to be a boss. As women I think we are constantly trying to prove ourselves. Being a true boss is about sticking true to your values and what you believe in. It also means showing up for those who show up for you. It’s about helping out others who have been in your shoes. Tha Shade Queen is about style and fashion but also about uplifting and inspiring other bosses. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well pre-COVID of course, I’d take them to one of my favorite wineries in Burleson, Tx called Lost Oak Winery. For a nice dinner I’d take them to True Kitchen in Dallas, black owned might I add! For fun I’d take them to Deep Ellum for some bar hopping and clubbing. Lastly for a nice little brunch vibe, I’d take them to Stirr in Dallas! So much to do in the DFW metroplex, but that’s my idea of a fun weekend!Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sister and nephew definitely deserve shoutouts because they gave me the idea to start a sunglass boutique. My friends get a big shoutout because they are continuously supporting my business by buying sunglasses or even just reposting my products on social media. And my parents because they created a young ambitious entrepreneur and have always supported me no matter how wild my ideas may be!
