We had the good fortune of connecting with Sytinenia Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sytinenia, do you have a budget? How do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
Of course I have a budget! A budget is an important necessity to ensure that I’m actually bringing in money and it keeps me from over spending. When I first started JoAnn, Michael’s, and Hobby Lobby would take all my money. But now that I have a strict budget, I only purchase when I need something or if a certain design requires it. Yet even for creative freedom spending, I have a set limit on that too. As far as lifestyle decisions, I don’t really do a whole lot so I always save money there because I naturally don’t enjoy shopping. Overall my personal and business are kept separate; which both have spending limits.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel like work life balance is challenging for many entrepreneurs especially when many of us work an additional full time job on top of our business. Recently, my husband has worked with me so that my business is now my full time job. So my work balance has been completely shifted, in an amazing way. I’m able to create a schedule that allows me to work on my crochet business while still being able to maintain my many other roles that come with being a military wife and being a mom. I’m still struggling at times but the freedom is completely amazing and I’ve already seen my business thrive more since it has become my full time job.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I’m new to this area, I’m still trying to see what Virginia has to offer. Now if I was still living in Jacksonville, my favorite spot was the beach. I love being at the beach and simply relaxing. My friends would actually enjoy a day at the beach, probably at Amelia Island. Later in the week, we would go to Sushi Bear because majority of my friends love Sushi as much as I do. Another spot we would have to hit up would be Buddha’s Belly for the best Thai food that city has to offer! I ate here 3xs during my birthday weekend and I enjoyed it every time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m from the lovely Sunshine state, Florida. I was born and raised in a city called Sanford. My grandmother would crochet the most beautiful doilies for her table and give them out as gifts. I always found the work so intricate and delicate. So I asked her to teach me, she just told me to watch her. Which I did and later on my mother gave me a book on how to crochet. I started off with the traditional beanies and scarves. Then later on as I got older, I discovered that I enjoyed working with the DMC threads (very thin fibers) to create smaller items. That branched off into creating crochet earrings. My family is full of strong black women and I was told that if it makes you happy, pursue it! So that’s what I’ve been doing and enjoying the journey!
