We had the good fortune of connecting with Susannah Hutcheson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susannah, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
In all honesty, I don’t know that work/life balance truly exists — for better or for worse. However, that doesn’t mean that joy shouldn’t come right alongside it. Before I took the leap to start my business and leave my full-time job, I was working truly insane hours and was essentially miserable. I got up for work every day around 5, got back around 5, and then worked on my side hustle until close to midnight each night — and that was a lack of work/life balance that led to tons of anxiety and exhaustion. However, now that I work for myself full-time, I have a messy sense of work/life balance that also goes hand-in-hand with joy and a love for what I’m doing. There are definitely some nights and weekends that I’m up late working on projects, but it doesn’t seem exhausting or anxiety-inducing to me… it just seems like something that I want to do. I think that the right job allows you to strike the right balance that works for you, and the right job (especially as an an entrepreneur) tends to intermingle with your life in a way that connects the two forever.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the founder of Susie B. & Co., a copywriting studio for businesses that make lives better. I believe completely in the power of words and how they can transform businesses — and I also know that, for a lot of people, words and writing are really difficult. My mission with Susie B. & Co. is to handle the messaging and copywriting arm of your business so that you can keep on keeping on with transforming lives and bringing more goodness to the world… and it’s pretty much the best job ever.

I actually went to school for journalism (Texas A&M Class of ’17), and never knew that a world existed that merged together storytelling and data until I discovered copywriting… and then I fell in love with it. After 3 years of teaching high school and starting to build a copywriting business on the side, I took the leap to go full-time about a year ago. Copywriting has allowed me to merge my journalism background and passion for people in order to create copy that truly connects with people and then converts them into paying customers — which helps grow businesses in a way that other forms of marketing can’t quite do alone.

When I look back at the 4 years since I’ve graduated college — 3 of which were spent in a high school classroom — it’s fun to see it all connect into where I am now, which is truly doing my absolute dream job. I can’t imagine anything more exciting than being able to use words to help business owners grow their own businesses, and it was worth every late night (and then some).

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First things first — coffee, of course! We would have to spend each morning somewhere new, so we’d definitely rotate through Merit, Cultivar, La La Land Kind Cafe (avo toast, please!), and LDU. I’d also recommend the croissants at Boulangerie to ANYONE, and we’d have to make a breakfast taco stop at TacoDeli and Chiloso. For dinner, we’d definitely have to hit Te Deseo, Sixty Vines, and Smoky Rose.

There are so many fun things to do, and I’m all about a downtown walking tour to see all the sights with a stop at The Midnight Rambler for a nightcap. The Sixth Floor Museum is perfect for any history buff, and Klyde Warren Park is a must-see for any Dallas visitor. The best of the best though waits in Bishop Arts — my all-time favorite neighborhood, full of great shops like Beatnik and fun stops like The Salty Donut. Then, we’d come back into my home base, White Rock Lake, for a picnic with a charcuterie board from Fount Board & Table in Uptown.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to all of the strong women that have walked before me and with me on this journey of becoming who I am today — because every single one of them has helped me get here. From my Grammy and my mom to my little sister and my best friends, I have been incredibly lucky to learn from and learn with women that know their worth and demand it. From the time I was a little girl, I was always told that I could do whatever and be whoever I wanted to be — and being raised with such incredible examples has meant absolutely everything in life (and, eventually, in my business).
