We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Lindsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As someone who grew up with a fear of failure and financial trauma (yes, financial trauma is totally a thing) I didn’t know a thing about work/life balance. My motto was “all work no play.” I was proud of my drive and all of the accolades I had put under by belt! It wasn’t until my time as a graduate student I realized rest was also productive. I was working two jobs (one of which was unpaid), going to school full-time, trying to be a friend, daughter, athlete, and pay my bills/be an adult. It was a hustle and I was depleted. I would wake up at 6:45am and not get home till 10pm or later 5 days a week. It took me years to learn that my first priority had to be myself, rest, and my needs. Today, I create my own schedule that works around my self-care activities. I play volleyball 3-4 times a week, go to my own therapy, go to the gym and on walks, read, see friends, watch tv, and do my adulting. It is awesome and I would never go back to that silly motto of “all work no play” because play is an essential for any human to be functioning and healthy – unfortunately, it is also a privilege. Therefore, one of my many goals for my clients are to reincorporate play into their working adult lives. It is here, we find balance.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business was designed to be different. We were tired of hopping around and trying to find referrals for 20 different professionals to get both our clients and our own holistic needs met. So, our business is…and will be, a one stop shop for both mental health and athlete clients. In the near future, we plan to add a nurse practitioner, yoga instructor, dietician, physical therapist, and personal trainer to our already existing mental health and sport psychology practice. We want to make holistic care easy, accessible, and affordable (as we our now accepting insurance).

Another exciting venture we are taking on is authorship. We just finished our first book “How To Start A Private Practice” and will be publishing within the next few weeks! This is the first notch of our “How To” series with more editions to come in the following years as we continue to grow and learn. I am also writing my own book about communication and attachment (a big piece of the work I do with my clients). My completion goal for this book is Spring 2023.

Overall, we found that starting our own business was risky, scary, and definitely not easy. However, it has been the best thing we have ever done. We are excited to advance the care of all our clients and really make an impact in our communities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a huge sports fan so, I love going to Cowboys, Mavericks, Legends, Rangers, Wings, and Stars games. I am from a city that had zero professional sports so I take advantage when I can. Other cool spots I would include would be Klyde Warren Park for some food truck and yoga action, Woodhouse Spa or a massage from Kendahl Airey (she is a true blessing), Lower Greenville for food and drinks, Happiest Hour because I am always down for that bean dip, salsa, and guac trio, and visiting The Star in Frisco. I am truly a homebody at the end of the day (and so are most people I know) so we would probably do something simple like going to see a movie or having dinner at a new place neither of us have been to before.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner in crime, business partner, and best friend, Kate Fowler. She continues to challenge me and help me grow both personally and professionally. We just wrote our first book together and I couldn’t be more proud of our growth as friends and business partners. We really make it work and that is hard to do!

Another huge shoutout need to go to Daniel Hartsock with Firstax. He is by far the best (and most personable) CPA we could have asked for. He is a huge reason why we have been so successful. That brain of his is smart and so full of knowledge.
