We had the good fortune of connecting with Staci Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Staci, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Honestly, I’d have to say it’s my husband/partner, Travis. Without him, I probably would have given up before I even really started. I am an all-or-nothing type of individual and that can cause some major issues when trying to start up my own business. I tend to see everything in black and white, pass or fail. And while that can help me work harder than some, it also puts a lot of stress on my shoulders. Even though it’s usually self induced, Travis is always there to support me and help carry any burden I may have. He has taught me a lot about perseverance and that success is not linear. Progress is success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have only been officially baking and decorating cookies for about 5 months now. I am still in awe of how well it is going. It has not been an easy road. The journey has been filled with moments of self doubt, failed trial batches, and bad words directed to the stove. But in those moments, I have learned more about myself than I ever thought possible. I don’t back down easily and every challenge that I have faced when it comes to my business, makes me want to work even harder.
I absolutely love what I do. If there is anything to take from my story, it’s that. Baking and decorating cookies, is a dream come true. It’s creating something from nothing. I enjoy wholeheartedly having a hand in every single part of the process. I am so excited to continue to learn and grow with my business. Who knows where I’ll be a year or even five years from now. All I know, is I look forward to finding out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a self proclaimed nerdy dork, the first place we would go would most likely be a local game store. I have two favorite ones I go to fairly often. Common Ground Games in Dallas, TX and Generation X Comics and Games in Bedford, TX. We would definitely take a day and drive out to Carrolton to get some delicious food at Hanabi Ramen and get pastries at 85C Bakery Cafe. Can’t forget to make a stop to Kinokuniya either. They have a variety of different books and manga. Pretty much anything a weeb like myself can dream of. The rest of the time will be spent playing video games and D&D.
If we’re lucky, there might be a convention going on and we would without a doubt go visit that. I just recently got to attend Anime Frontier and I had one of the greatest times of my life. If you’re into anime or geek culture in general, I highly suggest going to a convention. It is truly a sight to behold.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I already mentioned my husband, Travis. Without him there is no Fresh From The Coven.
But, there are a few more people that I believe also deserve a shout out.
My family and friends. They continue to support my dreams and that is honestly all I can ask for.
Elizabeth Bernal with Woolen Witch Crafts/Every Witch Way Denton is one of the main reasons why I am able to do what I do. A good friend suggested I apply to be a vendor at this witchy Denton event in August 2021, and I am honored that Elizabeth chose to allow me to have a booth there. I even sent her a message before she finalized the vendors, and told her she should pick someone else because I didn’t think my work was good enough. There’s that all or nothing mindset again. She believed in me from the start and because of her, I had an actual reason to start baking and expanding my knowledge and skill. I am truly thankful for her and Every Witch Way Denton.
And last but certainly not least, Gabby Sanchez from Cookie Thief Cake Co. She has been nothing but supportive of my cookier journey and I am grateful to have her in my corner. I value her opinion, not only as a trained pastry chef, but also as a friend/colleague.
